Gymnastics Overcomes Utah State's Early Threat in Dual-Meet Victory

DURHAM, N.H. - Co-captain Meghan Pflieger (Barneveld, N.Y.) earned victories on the floor exercise (9.900, season-high) and the all-around (39.125, season-high) in the University of New Hampshire Gymnastics team's victory over Utah State in Sunday's dual-meet.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Hampshire began on the vault, where Courtney Bondanza (Buffalo N.Y.) and Elizabeth Mahoney (Hanson, Mass.) each led the team with matching scores of 9.750. The performance was a personal best for Bondanza, who participated on the vault for the first time this season. The duo finished tied for sixth, as UNH was defeated by Utah State in the event, 48.950 to 48.600.
The Wildcats then moved to the bars, where Mulligan stole the show. The sophomore earned a victory in the event for the second straight week, as she recorded a season-high 9.900. Co-captain Jennifer King (Freehold, N.J.) followed closely behind, scoring a 9.775 and finishing in fourth place. The Aggies narrowly edged the 'Cats on the bars, 48.775 to 48.750.
On the balance beam, Lauter posted New Hampshire's top score for the second time this season. The junior won the event with a 9.850. Pflieger and Lia Breeden (York, Pa.) were also top performers in the event. Pflieger tied a season-high score of 9.825 and earned second place, while Breeden finished tied for third with a 9.775. UNH, while totaling its best beam score of the year, outscored Utah State 48.850 to 48.200 in the event.
In the final event of the afternoon, Pflieger set a new season high on the floor with a 9.900, finishing with a share of first place. O'Leary recorded a career-high 9.875 in the event while earning third place. Once again, the 'Cats saved their best performances for last, totaling a team score of 48.975 on the floor. The mark was high enough to defeat the Aggies in the event, as Utah State totaled 48.150.
TEAM NOTES
Following Sunday's meet, UNH hits the road for three consecutive weeks. The Wildcats visit 18th ranked George Washington for a tri-meet that includes Ball State (No. 31) on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 5, 1 p.m.), head to Bowling Green State in Ohio (Feb. 11, 2:30 p.m.) and then challenge EAGL rival North Carolina on (Feb. 17, 7 p.m.).

- The Wildcats have now defeated 24 consecutive opponents at Lundholm Gym in an impressive streak that dates back to March 8, 2014. With the victory today, New Hampshire defeated the Utah State Aggies in their first ever trip to Durham.
