DURHAM, N.H. – Five different Wildcats scored as the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team defeated Binghamton University, 6-0, Sunday afternoon at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats found their scoring touch, pouring in three goals in each half. This was the highest scoring output for New Hampshire since a home win against Northeastern University on Nov. 4, 2003.
Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) recorded two goals on three shots to lead the team. Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season and dished out two assists. Classmate Gabrielle Sloan (Stow, Mass.) returned to her scoring stride with a goal and an assist. The final two goals were scored by freshman Gaby Dorsey (Hubertus, Wis.) and sophomore Kendra Prince (Ajax, Ontario) late in the second half. Classmate Veronica Hardy (North Smithfield, R.I.) and freshman Kelsey Davis (Washingtonville, N.Y.) each recorded an assist. Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made two saves in a quiet day to improve her overall record to 3-5-3.
It took five minutes to tally a goal, as Sloan assisted on a Murray finish that was buried bottom right just past Binghamton's Katie Hatziyianis, whose record fell to 1-8-1 overall.
It wasn't long before the Wildcats tallied another, as Murray was fouled inside the box, earning a penalty kick attempt. Murphy stepped up and drilled the shot for her fifth goal of the season, and a 2-0 lead in the 11th minute.
Murphy recorded a second goal in the 31st minute off a low cross from Murray. Murphy ripped one which was pushed away by Hatziyianis and the rebound was wide open for Murphy to tap in bottom left to close out the first half with a 3-0 lead.
To open the second half, Sloan ripped a shot off the volley for her third goal of the season on a cross from Murray in the 50th minute. Murray, the team's assist leader, now has five assists on the season.
Dorsey earned her first career goal in the 68th minute when Hardy placed a bouncing cross into the box. Dorsey streaked to the far post and headed the ball just inside the right post for a 5-0 lead.
To cap off the impressive day on the backline, Prince scored her first career UNH goal on a Davis shot that rebounded off the goalkeeper and bounced right into the middle of the box for the Ontario Native to tap into the net.
The Bearcats were lead by Katherine Corcoran who totaled seven shots. Hatziyianis made six saves.
The Wildcats will hit the road to take on the University of Vermont on Thursday, Oct. 1 (3 p.m.) at Virtue Field, for the second conference game this season.
