Borkan and Defense Shined as Women’s Soccer Fell 1-0 in Overtime to Northeastern
9/20/2015 5:00:00 PM | Women's Soccer
DURHAM, N.H. – Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) and the defensive unit played solid but the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell 1-0 in double overtime to Northeastern University, Sunday afternoon at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats lose to a Husky team who made it to the NCAA tournament second round just a season ago. New Hampshire's record falls to 2-5-3 as Northeastern's improves to 7-3 overall.
Borkan made 11 saves in net, a season high, to hold Northeastern to just one goal. Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) rifled four shots on the afternoon, followed by sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) who totaled two.
For the Huskies, junior Breeana Koemans recorded the game winner and rocketed seven shots to lead the team. Off the bench, freshman Valentina Soares Gache earned the game-clinching assist. Sophomore Kayla Cappuzzo finished second in shots with five. Both Koemans and Cappuzzo had four shots on goal, tied for the team lead.
UNH was outshot 29-8 by NU, who controlled most of the play throughout the game. In the opening half, the Wildcats held strong on the defensive end, quarterbacked by goalkeeper Borkan who made five saves to hold Northeastern scoreless at halftime.
It was the same storyline in the second half, as Northeastern played its aggressive style on offense. New Hampshire picked up its offensive game toward the end of the second half, as Murray nearly recorded the game winner in the 84th minute which sailed just over the crossbar.
In the 93rd minute, Murphy almost scored her second game winner of the season from the left side of the net, but the ball flew just right of the post.
Just one minute into the second overtime, Koemans notched the deciding goal from the left side of the box. The ball was shot into the top right of the net, just out of the reach of Borkan.
The loss gives the 'Cats its third straight in overtime and fourth straight overall.
The Wildcats begin conference play when they host Binghamton University on Sunday, Sept. 27 (2 p.m.).
