COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Rize (Severn, Md.) made a career-high 11 saves but the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was defeated 5-2 Sunday afternoon by 10th-ranked University of Maryland at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex.
UNH is now 2-5 overall, including 0-5 on the road and 1-3 against nationally-ranked teams. Maryland, which recorded the edge in shots (22-14) and penalty corners (9-5), improved to 5-3.
Rize, whose previous career high was eight saves, stopped seven shots in the first half and four more in the second for her total of 11. UMD starting goalie Sarah Holliday recorded three saves and allowed one goal; she was credited with the win. Jill Genovese played the second half and stopped 4 of 5 shots on goal.
Meg Carroll (Mansfield, Mass.) and Meg Flatley (Townsend, Mass.) scored the UNH goals and Ashley Mendonca (Brampton, Ontario) was credited with an assist.
Sarah Sprink recorded two goals and an assist for the Terrapins, who also had single tallies from Anna Desoye, Carrie Hanks and Welma Luus. Lein Holsboer finished with two assists.
The Wildcats recorded the first shot of the game when Flatley's bid was stopped by Holliday 55 seconds after the opening whistle.
UMD generated three scoring chances in a two-minute span, but Rize denied both Linnea Gonzales and Sprink, and Gonzales also fired wide on a penalty corner. Rize turned aside another Gonzales shot at 9:41 to keep the game scoreless.
The Wildcats threatened in the 15th minute, but Holliday made the initial save against Gianna Bensaia (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and another off the rebound by Lynne Lehman (Landisburg, Pa.). UNH continued to pressure and generated a corner that resulted in a shot by Lindsey Nerbonne (Bow, N.H.) that was blocked by a Terps' defender.
Maryland converted a corner into a 1-0 lead at 17:24 on Sprink's direct shot from the top of the circle. The battery of Emma Rissinger and Holsboer set up the goal.
Two minutes later, UNH earned a corner and UMD's defense once again blocked the shot, this one off the stick of Jackie Hozza (Singing Spring, Pa.).
The home team extended the advantage to 2-0 at 20:57 on another direct shot off a penalty corner. This time the battery of Sprink and Leathers set up Carrie Hanks.
Rize kept the 'Cats within striking distance with saves against Hanks in the 25th minute and then Gonzales and Julie Duncan in the 26th minute. Maryland continued to attack and converted another corner into a 3-0 lead at 25:49; Sprink's direct shot was set up by Floor Paanakker and Holsboer.
Neither team recorded another shot or corner for six minutes, then a flurry of shots produced a 4-0 lead at 31:57. Rize stopped Paanakker's initial shot and a second shot by Alyssa Parker was blocked, but Dessoye scored off the rebound.
New Hampshire pulled within 4-1 before halftime when Flatley scored off her own rebound at 34:02.
UNH pressured in the opening minutes of the second half. The Wildcats generated a corner in the 38th minute, but Hozza's shot was blocked. Four minutes later on another corner, Nerbonne was denied twice by Genovese and Hozza's bid off those rebounds was also stopped by the UMD goalie. The 'Cats received another corner and this time Nerbonne's blast was blocked away.
The Wildcats broke through for a second goal at 42:37 when Carroll's hard shot from five yards out found the back of the cage to trim the deficit to 4-2. Mendonca was credited with an assist.
UNH quickly went back on the attack and Genovese had to deny Flatley's bid at 42:57. The 'Cats did not record a shot the rest of the way, however.
Maryland reestablished a three-goal lead, 5-2, when Julie Duncan set up Luus at 47:19.
The Terrapins called time out at 49:10 and less than one minute later, they penetrated the circle and Luus' shot was stopped by Rize. Both offenses were held at bay until 60:16, when a UMD corner produced Hanks' shot that was blocked. One minute later, Rize turned away Olivia Reiter.
Rize made her 10th save of the game against Sprink at 64:53 and made another against Holsboer with under two minutes to play.
