Women's T&F Takes Fifth at New Englands Behind Twombly and 4x800 Relay

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.- Senior Anne Twombly (Exeter, N.H.) is a New England Champion in the 1,500-meter race as the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team placed fifth overall at the New England Outdoor Championships at the Henry G. Steinbrenner Stadium on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus.
The Wildcats were able to capture fifth overall, against a total of 41 schools, with 57.50 points. The final day had a second overall New England Champion joining senior Chelsey Serrano (Raymond, N.H.) who won gold in the 10,000-meter race yesterday (May 8).
Twombly, who was a New England Champion in the same event in 2013, set a personal best time of 4-minutes, 21.95-seconds for the gold medal in the 1,500-meter race. Angelyn Masters finished 15th overall with a time of 4:40.02 while sophomore Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) broke the tape in 4:45.32 for 25th place.
The 4x800 team of sophomore Amanda Szymanski (Londonderry, N.H.), senior Rachel DePalma (Orange, Conn.), Angelyn Masters and Kimball secured second place with a time of 8:57.89.
Senior Jessica Salley (Andover, Mass.) led four Wildcat high jumpers with a height of 1.70-meters for the bronze medal. Freshman Jeannette Mara (Bedford, N.H.) tied her personal best with a jump of 1.65-meters to take eighth place. Classmate Tessa Artruc (Livonia, N.Y.) placed 10th overall with a 1.60-meter jump while Rachel Morrison finished 17th overall with a height of 1.60-meters as well.
The 4x100 relay team pulled out a seventh place finish with a time of 48.11-seconds by senior Virginia Lavallee (Kingston, N.H.), junior Lauren Perrodin (Coral Springs, Fla.), classmate Sydney Kay (Fairfield, Conn.) and freshman Danielle Gajewski (Danville, N.H.).
The 4x400 team finished 12th with Gajewski running the first leg, sophomore Alyson Messina (Plymouth, Mass.) and senior Morgan Costa (Standish, Maine) running the middle legs and the final leg was completed by Kay, breaking the tape in 3:56.45.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Messina, who qualified seventh during yesterday's preliminaries with a time of 1:03.29, scored fourth overall decreasing her time to 1:02.64 in the finals.
Another personal best on the day came from freshman Emily Wernig in the discus, tossing the disc a distance of 39.86-meters for fifth overall.
