Two School Records Fall as Men's Track & Field Competes at Day Two of IC4A Championships

PRINCETON, N.J. – Senior Kevin Greene (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Drew Piazza (Danvers, Mass.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team each set new school records as the team competed at the second day of the IC4A Championships on Saturday. The event is being held at Princeton University.
The Wildcats are currently in 10th place with 6.50 points. Manhattan College is in first place with 20.50 points while the University of Rhode Island is second with 15 points. University of Pennsylvania is third with 13 points while Cornell University (10) and Northeastern University are tied for fourth place.
Greene was the top qualifier in the 1,500-meter run as he placed first in his heat and overall. He ran a school record time of three minutes, 44.66 seconds, breaking an eight-year old record set by Robert Edgerton ('08) that was 3:45.88. Greene will compete in Sunday's finals. Piazza claimed the top spot in the preliminaries of the 800-meter run. He also ran a UNH record time of 1:47.66 and will compete in Sunday's finals. He broke his own school record of 1:48.40 set at the Larry Ellis Invitational on April 17.
Senior thrower Jake Renaud (Lancaster, N.H.) took first in his flight group and tied for third overall in the hammer throw, earning the Wildcats 5.50 points. He hit a career best mark of 60.89 meters. Sophomore Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) took 10th in his flight group and 15th overall as he threw a distance of 55.75 meters.
Senior Daniel Johnson (Lancaster, N.H.) completed the remaining five events of the decathlon; the 110-meter hurdles, the discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and the 1,500-meter run. Johnson took first in his heat and fifth overall in the 110-hurdles as he clocked in with a time of 15.74 seconds. He then took third in the discus throw as he hit a distance of 37.56 meters.
In the pole vault, Johnson launched himself a height of 3.85 meters to tie for eighth in the event. The height tied a career-high mark. In the ninth event of the two-day competition, the javelin throw, Johnson took fourth place with a distance of 47.65 meters, a new career best. The 10th and final event, the Granite State native took fourth place in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:43.34, also a new career best. He ended the decathlon in eighth place with 6,421 points, another career high mark.
Junior sprinter Isaiah Penn (Boston, Mass.) competed in the 400-meter dash. He took fourth in his heat and tied for 15th overall as he came in with a time of 48.68 seconds. Sophomore Ryan Maney (Reading, Mass.) ran in the 110-meter hurdles and completed the race in 21st with a time of 14.83 seconds.
Greene will compete in Sunday's finals of the 1,500-meter run at 12:25 p.m. while Piazza will run the finals of the 800-meter run at 1:40 p.m.
