Emma Converse exploded for a career-high 20 kills in the win, earning Tournament MVP
DURHAM, N.H. — The University of New Hampshire women's volleyball team took care of business against Providence College (2-1, 0-0 Big East) on Saturday evening (Aug. 29) at Lundholm Gymnasium, winning 3-1. The set scores were 21-25, 25-8, 25-23, and 25-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1
-Providence and New Hampshire opened the match by trading blows, culminating in an early 12-8 lead for the Friars. For the 'Cats, Lucy Chertock (Danville, Calif.) paced the early production with three kills in the match's first 20 points.
-The Wildcats and Friars continued to trade blows through the midpoint, giving Providence a 22-18 edge. In the 10-8 run, Rachel Grier (Dublin, Calif.) earned three kills while Evelyn Brenton (Glastonbury, Conn.) put away a pair.
-Providence took the first set on a late 3-1 run, winning 25-21.
SET 2
-New Hampshire took control early in the second set, starting the frame with a 16-3 lead. In the offensive flurry, Emma Converse (San Antonio, Texas) paced the attack with five kills, while Grier poured on three and both Chertock and Dylan Hunt (Pickerington, Ohio) added one apiece.
-Despite Providence showing signs of life late, the Wildcats closed out on a 9-5 run to take the second set in a commanding 25-8 fashion. Converse closed out with an additional four kills, bringing her set total to nine.
SET 3
-The Wildcats continued to pour it on early in the third set, opening the frame on a 12-2 run, powered by kills from five different players.
-Providence began to bring it back, ringing off a 19-9 run to even the set, 21-21.
-Despite the late scare, the Wildcats rallied off a 4-2 run, fueled by a pair of kills from Converse, to take the set 25-23.
SET 4
-New Hampshire and Providence went back and forth to begin the fourth set, with a pair of kills from Chertock and Caitlin Leddy (Hinsdale, Ill.) highlighting the Wildcats' 11-9 run.
-The 'Cats found a cushion in the middle stages of the frame, with three kills from Grier and two apiece from Leddy and Varvara Zvereva (Korolev, Russia) to make it 20-13.
-New Hampshire closed out the set on a 5-0 run, powered by a three-kill finish from Converse to take the fourth set 25-13.
