Abaka-Amuah, McGovern & Zalenski to Compete in NCAA East First Round

The ‘Cats will take on the competition on May 28 in Jacksonville, Fla.
INDIANAPOLIS – Junior Yoofi Abaka-Amuah (Worcester, Mass.), junior Liam McGovern (North Kingstown, R.I.) and junior Caden Zalenski (Milford, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire men's track and field team will compete in the 2025 NCAA East First Round at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on Wednesday, May 28 at Hodges Stadium.

For each individual event contested at the East First Round, the top 48 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. This is the second straight NCAA First Round appearance for McGovern, while Abaka-Amuah and Zalenski's are making their debuts.
McGovern and Zalenski qualified for the hammer throw which starts at 10 a.m., while Abaka-Amuah will compete in the shot put at 6 p.m. McGovern is the No. 23 seed and Zalenski is the No. 47 seed. Abaka-Amuah will enter the event as the No. 19 seed. The top 12 competitors from each individual event advance to the Track and Field Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., on June 11-14.
Abaka-Amuah qualified for the first round in the shot put with a school and facility record with a throw of 61' 9" to place first at the Pre-Conference Invitational at UMass on April 27. At the America East Championships, he won the Coaches Award for recording the most points with 22 over the two days and was also named the Most Outstanding Field Performer. Abaka-Amuah won gold in the shot put at the America East Championships and at the New England Championships.
McGovern earned his spot in the NCAAs with a personal-best distance of 212' 11" to win the gold medal in the hammer throw at the America East Championships on May 3. He also captured gold in the hammer throw at the New England Championships and placed first at the Jim Boulanger Invitational, Pre-Conference Qualifier at UMass and the Final Qualifier at MIT.
Zalenski's top toss of the year in the hammer throw was personal record of 202' 9" at the Final Qualifier at MIT on May 15 to place second. He earned a silver medal at the New England Championships and was fourth at the America East Championships. Zalenski was second at the Pre-Conference Qualifier at UMass and third at the Jim Boulanger Invitational.
