Graduate student safety honored for 50-yard Pick-6, 10-tackles at UAlbany
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wande Owens (Cooksville, Md.), a graduate student safety for the UNH football team, was awarded the weekly New England Football Writers Association Gold Helmet Award presented by the Jack Grinold/Eastern Massachusetts Chapter of the National Football Foundation.
Owens returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown and led the Wildcats (5-4, 3-2 CAA) with 10 tackles (seven solo) in last Saturday's 31-14 victory at UAlbany. It was UNH's first Pick-6 since Randall Harris took an INT 25 yards for a touchdown against Monmouth at Wildcat Stadium on Sept. 1, 2022, and it was the longest INT returned for a TD since Evan Horn (50 yards) versus Elon on Oct. 5, 2019 (Oleh Manzyk had a 55-yard Pick-6 earlier in that game.) The 50-yard INT return was UNH's longest since Pop Bush returned a 65-yarder at Stony Brook on Sept. 2, 2021.
With 81 tackles, Owens leads UNH and is tied for fourth in the CAA in that department. He is the second Wildcat to win a Gold Helmet Award this season (Seth Morgan, Sept. 15).
On Tuesday, Owens was also named the DC Touchdown Club Washington Metro College Football Player of the Week by the Military Bowl Foundation.
