Wildcat trio to compete as event specialists for second straight season
INDIANAPOLIS – UNH gymnasts Kylie Gorgenyi (North Reading, Mass.), Hailey Lui (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alyssa Worthington (West Warwick, R.I.) each were selected Tuesday to compete in the 2022 NCAA Gymnastics Auburn Regional Championship, hosted by Auburn University, on March 30-April 2.
The three Wildcat student-athletes will compete as individual event specialists Thursday, March 31. Gorgenyi will see action in the 2 p.m. ET session that includes host and No. 7 Auburn, No. 10 Kentucky, Southern Utah and Georgia. Lui and Worthington compete in the 8 p.m. ET session that features No. 2 Florida, No. 15 Denver, Ohio State and the winner of Wednesday's first-round matchup between Iowa State and Western Michigan.
"I am extremely proud of Hailey, KG and Alyssa for their hard work and consistency," head coach Lindsey Bruck Ayotte said. "They put in the time and effort every opportunity they have in the gym. Their determination has paid off, and we are excited they get to continue their season at NCAA Regionals."
Gorgenyi, an All-EAGL First Team performer on vault and uneven bars for three straight seasons, returns to NCAA Regionals for the second year in a row. The junior was EAGL's No. 2 ranked vault performer with a 9.865 National Qualifying Score (NQS). The native of North Reading, Mass., ranked fourth on bars with a 9.865 NQS that included a career-high 9.900 set Feb. 12 versus Brown and matched March 13 (Senior Day) when the Wildcats set their all-time bar score (49.325) against Penn State, Brown and Southern Connecticut State at the Whittemore Center. In the EAGL Championship at George Washington on March 19, Gorgenyi garnered All-Tournament First Team on bars (9.850, T-7th) and Second Team on vault (9.800, T-10th).
Lui, EAGL's regular-season balance beam champion (9.910 NQS), looks to repeat her beam performance from the 2021 NCAA Morgantown (W.Va.) Regional, when she tied UCLA's Norah Flatley for first place (9.875) in the second-round night session. Lui is a four-time All-EAGL beam-team representative, including three consecutive First-Team berths. The senior established a personal best with a 9.975 on Jan. 23 in a home tri-meet against Temple and Penn when the Wildcats scored a program beam-record 49.450.
Worthington makes it back-to-back Regional appearances as a beam specialist on the heels of a tremendous EAGL Championship last weekend. The junior scored a 9.900 to register the highest score of the afternoon session and tie for second place overall for All-Tournament First-Team honors. The West Warwick, R.I., native has been on the All-EAGL First Team three straight seasons and notched a 9.880 NQS and a tie for No. 5 in the conference. Her season high is a 9.900 (2x - Jan. 23, Feb. 25).
The other NCAA Regional sites are Illinois (Champaign, Ill.), Washington (Seattle, Wash.) and N.C. State (Raleigh, N.C.).
The top two teams and the top all-around competitor (who is not on an advancing team) from each of the four NCAA Regional sites will receive an automatic berth to the 2022 NCAA Gymnastics Championships on April 14-16 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas. In addition, the top event specialist at each regional site who is not part of an advancing team or all-around competitor, will advance to the national championships in that event only.
