DeAndrade Returns; Barnette, Goldberger Sign On
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire head football coach Rick Santos on Wednesday announced three additions to his first Wildcat staff, including former All American player Casey DeAndrade, who will return for his second stint as an assistant coach in the program.
DeAndrade is returning to the fold as the coach of the defensive backs – the position he exceled at as a player - after spending the last three seasons coaching at Holy Cross.
Stephen Barnette, an all-conference player in the Colonial Athletic Conference while at Richmond, is joining the staff as wide receivers' coach. He most recently has been on the staff at Towson University.
Jesse Goldberger is the new director of football operations.
DeAndrade was a four-year starter for the Wildcats and was a captain and named a first-team All American as a senior. He interned for a season at UNH in strength and conditioning and quality control, coached running backs for a year with the team and then coached at Holy Cross for the three seasons.
"Casey epitomizes everything that is great about UNH football," Santos said. "He was a proven leader as a student athlete and has developed into an elite young coach with a winning pedigree."
DeAndrade was a starter in the defensive backfield from the first game of his redshirt freshman season in 2013 and helped the Wildcats to some of their best years ever, including appearances in the NCAA FCS semifinals in 2013 and 2014.
The Wildcats went 12-2 overall and swept the Colonial Athletic Association with an 8-0 mark in 2014.
DeAndrade finished his career with nine interceptions and 285 tackles and ranked No. 1 on the team in tackles in 2017 and was in the top four in that category in each of his seasons.
UNH put together an overall record of 37-17 in his four seasons as a cornerback.
"Casey has a strong work ethic, he's a man of integrity and has a high football IQ," Santos said. "He will relate to our players and be someone who his group and the entire team will believe in. We're thrilled to have Coach DeAndrade back in Durham."
Barnette was a standout wide receiver at Richmond. He led the CAA in receiving yards with 1,189 as a junior in 2013 and was tied with UNH's R.J. Harris, also a junior that year, in receptions with 76. Barnette's senior season ended with a knee injury after five games. Most recently, he was a quality control coach at Towson.
"Steve is a young, up-and-coming star in the coaching profession," Santos said. "He understands this league well, being a former All-Conference player at Richmond. He is a developer of men and will bring energy and passion to the wide receiver room. He will help make our players better on and off the field. Steve is smart, detailed and a technician in how he approaches the game. He is a great communicator, which will allow him to thrive in recruiting as well. We're truly excited to have him be a part of our family"
Goldberger comes to UNH from Central Connecticut State University where he coached running backs and was the video coordinator and assistant director of operations.
"Jesse is intelligent, detailed and extremely organized," Santos said. "He has a background in the logistics side of football and has coached multiple positions as well. His balance between operations and coaching makes him uniquely qualified to thrive in this role. He will be a pivotal piece in how our program is structured moving forward. We welcome him to our team and are very excited he's a Wildcat."
Santos was named the 20th head coach of the Wildcats on Dec. 7. He replaces Sean McDonnell, who led the team for 23 seasons, starting in 1999. McDonnell announced his retirement on Dec. 1.
