Wildcats defeated 194.000-192.250 by Towson in season opener

Lui, Worthington tie for top score (9.875, beam); Gorgenyi wins vault, all-around
DURHAM, N.H. – Senior Hailey Lui (Collegeville, Pa.) and junior Alyssa Worthington (West Warwick, R.I.) tied for the highest score of the meet (9.875) on balance beam, and junior Kylie Gorgenyi (North Reading, Mass.) posted podium finishes in three events while capturing the all-around championship in the UNH gymnastics team's 194.000-192.250 EAGL loss to Towson University on Sunday at Lundholm Gym.

"It was great to get out there and compete in front of our fans," head coach Lindsey Bruck Ayotte said. "We had a good amount of the team step up when others were out because of COVID protocols. We look forward to next weekend and having more of the team back!"

NEXT UP
•UNH hits the road for the first time this season to compete in a quad meet at Rutgers on Saturday, Jan. 15 (1 p.m.). EAGL rivals North Carolina and N.C. State will round out the participants.
•The UNH/UNC matchup will count as an EAGL regular-season meet as the only head-to-head encounter scheduled between the two programs prior to the 2022 EAGL Championship (March 19 at George Washington).
HOW IT HAPPENED
VAULT (UNH 48.250-Towson 48.225)
•Gorgenyi's 9.800 topped all competitors, followed by Towson's Lauren Bolen and Camille Vitoff. Freshman Gracy Mowers (Middleton, Mass.) debuted with a 9.700 for sole possession of fourth place.
BARS (Towson 48.750-UNH 47.800)
•Gorgenyi took second with a 9.800. The Tigers boasted six of the top seven scores, led by Steph Macasu (9.850, 1st). Freshman Summer Simpkins (Audubon, N.J.) and sophomore Gia Graver (East Northport, N.Y.) shared eighth place (9.650).
BEAM (UNH 48.475-Towson 48.450)
•The Wildcats swept the podium with Worthington and Lui followed closely by Gorgenyi, who equaled a personal best with a 9.850. Simpkins scored a 9.775 (seventh).
FLOOR (Towson 48.575-UNH 47.725)
•Towson's Paige Casper and Amy Stewart shared the high score (9.800), while Mowers collected third place with a 9.775. Junior Larissa Biette (Belmont, Mass.) placed fifth (9.675), and Worthington earned a share of sixth (9.650); each was making her collegiate floor debut.
NOTEBOOK
•Biette was presented the team's Katie Baldwin Expression Award for team spirit, performance artistry and personality. She competed three events (vault, bars, floor) for the first time in her career.
•Gorgenyi (38.475 AA) was the only gymnast from either team to compete all four events.
•The meet was originally scheduled to be a tri-meet, but Southern Connecticut State withdrew on Thursday in adherence with SCSU's health and safety guidelines.
•It had been 686 days since UNH last played host to a regular-season meet in front of fans at Lundholm Gym on February 23, 2020.
