Winer ties career high on vault and shares first on floor exercise

DURHAM, N.H.– Emma Winer (Georgetown, Mass.) equaled a personal best on vault (9.850) and shared first place on floor exercise (9.900) to lead the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team to a 195.300 in Sunday afternoon's loss to EAGL rival North Carolina, which totaled a season-high 196.100 on Staff/Faculty Appreciation Day at Lundholm Gym.

UNH (9-4, 4-1 EAGL) eclipsed the 195.000 mark for the sixth straight meet but sustained its first official conference defeat of the season to the Tar Heels (6-5, 2-2 EAGL).

"The meet didn't go as well as we were hoping," head coach Lindsey Bruck Ayotte said. "It was really nice to finally hit the 49.000 mark on vault. We just need to keep believing in our gymnastics and knowing we are a great team. I know we have so much more to give!"

UNH scored a season-high on vault in large part due to the career-high-matching efforts of Winer and Kylie Gorgenyi (North Reading, Mass./9.850), who shared second place behind North Carolina's Khazia Hislop (9.900), EAGL's No. 1-ranked vault competitor.

Riley Freehling (Southington, Conn.) set a career high on vault (9.800), equaled a season high on uneven bars (9.825) to tie Gorgenyi for second place on that apparatus, and she took first place in all-around with a 38.850, which bettered UNC's Elizabeth Culton (38.425).

•The Freehling/Gorgenyi second-place duo was supported by the fourth-place-tying Ava Watkins (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and Clare Hampford (Trumbull, Conn.), who each scored a 9.750.

Hailey Lui soared to a team-high 9.875 on beam

Third Rotation – Beam
•Hailey Lui (Collegeville, Pa.) posted a team-leading 9.875 to share second place with UNC's Alexis Allen, while Kelley and Alyssa Worthington (West Warwick, R.I.) continued their consistent freshman campaigns with scores of 9.825 (T-4^th). Winer earned a 9.800 (eighth), which was her highest beam mark since Jan. 26.

Fourth Rotation – Floor
•Winer hit for a 9.900 to top the podium on floor (tied with Hislop) for the fourth time this season. The senior has at least tied for UNH's top floor score in eight out of nine meets and achieved a 9.900 or better in three of the last four. Kelley (9.825, fourth) missed a personal best by 0.025 and Watkins placed fifth (9.800).

NEXT UP: UNH visits Bruck Ayotte's alma mater, 6^th-ranked Michigan, for a dual meet Friday, Feb. 28, at 6:30 p.m. (BTN+) at Crisler Arena.
