BOSTON – Four University of New Hampshire women's cross country athletes were named to the America East All-Academic Team, the league announced Wednesday afternoon.
Junior Cayla Barretto (Woburn, Mass.), senior Meg Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.), junior Elisabeth Danis (Nottingham, N.H.) and fifth-year Shannon Murdock (Exeter, N.H.) were all honored as all-academic team members for their performance this season on and off the cross country course. All four runners were a huge part of UNH's seventh America East Title, already earning all-conference honors at that meet. UNH's four selections to the All-Academic team were the most from an America East team this season.
Barretto, a nursing major, posted a 3.73 GPA while appearing in all seven of UNH's meets this season; Barretto was named to the America East Second Team for her 11th place finish on the 5-kilometer course at the America East Championship meet. In her career, Barretto has been a two-time America East Commissioner's Honor Roll member, an Academic Honor Roll member, and was a member of 2018's All-Academic team.
Champagne, an English major, finished with a First Team All-Conference honor at the league's championship meet finishing fifth overall. Champagne also competed in six of UNH's seven total meets this season, finishing fifth or better in four of them, all while posting a 3.62 GPA. She was the lead runner in a perfect score victory over Maine earlier this fall, and is a three-time Commissioner's Honor Roll member in her career.
Danis, an exercise science major, posted a 3.56 GPA while appearing in six meets in her debut season with the Wildcats. Danis was the America East Individual runner up at this years championship meet, garnering First Team All-Conference honors. She finished in the top five four times this season, and in her first academic year with the University made the 2019 spring commissioner's honor roll.
Murdock, a nursing major in grad school, just won the conference's Elite-18 award for being the medalist in the championship meet with the highest GPA, 3.72. Murdock is no stranger to the America East cross country podium, this is her second straight First Team All-Conference honor in as many performances. Murdock finished right behind Danis in third, propelling the 'Cats to a low team score for the victory. Murdock has made the Commissioner's Honor Roll four times in her career and was an inductee into Chi Alpha Sigma in 2018.
