Birchard, Kelly win Gold for Team Canada

OBIHIRO, Japan – Canada's National Women's Under-18 team claimed gold this past Sunday morning, defeating the United States by a score of 3-2 in overtime.
Two ties to University of New Hampshire women's hockey received a gold medal for their role with the team: former player and All-American Courtney (Birchard) Kessel '11 (Mississauga, Ontario), future Wildcat Nicole Kelly (Brantford, Ontario).
Kessel, an assistant coach for Team Canada U-18, was a member of the 2010 All-America second team as a junior, and a multi-time Hockey East award winner, including first team all-star, player and rookie of the week, and all-tournament team member. Birchard also was a candidate for the 2010 Patty Kazmaier award.
A new signee to UNH, Nicole Kelly tallied the first goal for Canada in its 4-3 overtime semifinal victory against Russia. Kelly's goal came just three minutes after Russia's opening goal, when she stole the puck in the corner and back-handed in the equalizer.
