Mulligan's PB on Bars Leads Gymnastics Past UIC, 195.700-194.775

O’Leary, Lauter, Freehling Add Event Victories for Wildcats
CHICAGO - Danielle Mulligan (Farmingdale, N.Y.), the East Atlantic Gymnastics League's top-ranked uneven bar competitor, equaled her personal best and matched the highest bar score (9.925) scored by any EAGL gymnast this season to win that event and spearhead the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team to a 195.700-194.775 victory against the University of Illinois at Chicago on Sunday at the UIC Pavilion.
UNH improved to 11-6 on the season and 8-3 in non-conference competition.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Rotation
•Paced by Mulligan's first-place performance, the Wildcats scored a 48.975 on bars in the opening rotation. Lauren Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa.) scored a 9.850 to tie for second place with UIC's Riley Cholod. Riley Freehling (Southington, Conn.) earned a share of fifth place with a 9.775.
Second Rotation
•UNH built momentum in the second event with five of its six gymnasts placing in the Top 5 on vault. Nicole O'Leary (Newtown, Conn.) headlined the effort with a 9.875 to top the podium. Marissa Toci (Mount Laurel, N.J.) tied for second place (9.825) with Mikailla Northern of the Flames. Erin Carroll (Kingston, N.H.), Diggan and Danielle Doolin (Medford Lakes, N.J.) each registered a 9.775 to share fourth-place honors, and the 'Cats totaled a 49.025 for their highest team mark of the meet.
Third Rotation
•The Wildcats' floor lineup also stepped up with a 49.000. Doolin (9.850) claimed second place, O'Leary (9.800) finished third and Lia Breeden (York, Pa.) took fourth (9.800). UIC's Northern won the floor exercise event with a 9.900.
Fourth Rotation
•The duo of Casey Lauter (Northport, N.Y.) and Freehling shared the balance beam championship with matching scores of 9.825, and Mulligan scored a 9.725 (fourth place) to ignite UNH's team score of 48.700.
A LOOK AHEAD
•The 2018 EAGL Championship, hosted by Towson University, will take place Saturday, March 24, at 2 p.m. The Wildcats will compete against No. 18 George Washington, North Carolina, No. 23 North Carolina State, Pittsburgh and the host Tigers at SECU Arena in Towson, Md.
FIGHTING FOR AN NCAA REGIONAL BERTH
•Through Sunday night's results, UNH is ranked 34th in the RoadtoNationals.com rankings. The top 36 teams will qualify for the NCAA Regional Championships, which will be announced Monday, March 26.
•With a Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) of 195.725, the Wildcats are ahead of No. 35 Central Michigan (195.705), No. 36 Iowa (195.680), No. 37 Arizona (195.630), No. 38 Utah State (195.575) and No. 39 North Carolina (195.515) in a wide open race to Regionals.
