HOW IT HAPPENED
1st Quarter
- UNH received the opening kickoff and drove 33 yards on eight plays before having to punt from the URI 42. The Wildcats advanced as far as the URI 32 but lost yardage on back-to-back plays to end the drive.
- New Hampshire's defense forced a 3-and-out, but URI forced a fumble on the ensuing punt return and regained possession at the UNH 48; the 'Cats did not commit a turnover the previous three games.
- The Rams then converted 3rd-and-15 with a 17-yard run and advanced the ball to the UNH 8. The Wildcats' defense stiffened and C.J. Carrick kicked a 27-yard field goal to give the home team a 3-0 lead at 3:21.
- Lawson scored on a 20-yard run to cap a 9-play, 80-yard drive to give URI a 10-0 lead at 6:09.
- Both teams struggled offensively in the first half with URI recording 131 yards of total offense and UNH 97.
3rd Quarter
- The Rams scored on the opening possession of the second half. With URI facing 3rd-and-12 at the UNH 16, Lawson connected with Marven Beauvais for a 16-yard touchdown pass to extend the lead to 17-0 at 11:20. The scoring drive was seven plays for 63 yards.
- On the next UNH drive, the Wildcats advanced to the URI 31 (35 of the 44 yards came on a run by Washington), but the 'Cats lost possession when a Herion pass was incomplete on 4th-and-10.
- The Wildcats trimmed the deficit to 17-7 on an 8-yard touchdown run by Washington. There were three consecutive plays of 15+ yards early in the drive as the 'Cats quickly advanced the ball from the UNH 15 across midfield. Herion connected with Presley for a 17-yard gain, followed by a 20-yard run by Washington and a 15-yard completion to O'Connor. Three plays later, Herion's 17-yard completion set up 1st-and-goal at the URI 8. The scoring drive was eight plays for 85 yards and took 3:47 off the clock.
4th Quarter
- With the Rams facing 3rd-and-33 from their 20, Horton forced a fumble and Reisert recovered at the URI 22 at 13:54. Five plays later, Washington punched it in the end zone from one yard out to trim the deficit to 17-14 at 12:13.
- Dorsey returned the ensuing kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown to give Rhode Island a 24-14 lead at 11:58.
- Herion completed four consecutive passes of 10-plus yards -- 11 and 13 to Presley, 11 to Evan Gray (Centreville, Va.) and 12 to Presley -- to give the 'Cats 1st-and-10 at the URI 20. Two plays later, however, Momodou Mbye (team-leading seven tackles) intercepted a pass at the URI 12 to give the home team possession of the ball with 5:45 on the clock.
- New Hampshire's defense stood strong and the 'Cats got the ball back, 1st-and-10 at the URI 43 with 4:06 remaining.
- Herion's 35-yard pass play to Sean Coyne (Portsmouth, R.I./three catches, 45 yards) set up 1st-and-goal. After two incompletions, a defensive pass interference call gave UNH another first down at the URI 2 and Washington ran it in for his third rushing TD of the game on the next play to lift the 'Cats within 24-21 with 3:15 remaining.
- The Wildcats' last-ditch drive was snuffed out by an interception by D.J. Stewart (six tackles) at the URI 40 with 1:02 left.
