Due to the expected impact of Hurricane Irma, Saturday's game between UNH and Georgia Southern has been relocated to Legion Field, home of the University of Alabama Birmingham football team. It will be UNH's first game played in the state of Alabama.
This is the second consecutive year Mother Nature has impacted the UNH football schedule. Last year, Hurricane Matthew's arrival in North Carolina prompted UNH and Elon to push up the game one day to Friday, Oct. 7; the Wildcats persevered through the rain for a 13-10 victory.
Saturday's game will mark the second time in UNH history that a neutral-site game will not be played in the state of either school. The other time was Dec. 6, 1975, when Western Kentucky prevailed 14-3 in an NCAA Division II semifinal game – the Grantland Rice Bowl – in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
The last time UNH played a neutral-site game was Oct. 22, 2011. New Hampshire defeated UMass, 27-21, in the Colonial Clash at Gillette Stadium (home of the NFL's New England Patriots; Foxborough, Mass.).
UNH also defeated UMass, 39-13, in the 2010 Colonial Clash at Gillette Stadium.
Since 1922, the only other neutral site game was played Oct. 6, 1934 vs. Boston University in Riverside, Mass.; BU won 13-12.
New Hampshire is led by 19th-year head coach Sean McDonnell, who has guided the Wildcats to the NCAA FCS tournament each of the last 13 years (longest active streak in the nation).
UNH was victorious in the Thursday Night Throwdown game against interstate rival Maine. A home-opener record crowd of 15,854 at Wildcat Stadium saw the 'Cats prevail 24-23.
With this year's one-point win against Maine, the Wildcats have won 13 consecutive home openers. The last time UNH lost a home opener was 2004 (9-7 to William & Mary).
New Hampshire had a 4-3 record away from Durhanm in the 2016 season. The past five years (2012-16), UNH is 18-16 outside of Durham and that includes an 0-5 mark vs. FBS teams.
The 'Cats have a 2-1 record against current members of the Sun Belt conference. In addition to winning the only previous meeting vs. Georgia Southern (27-23 in 2004), UNH is 1-0 vs. Georgia State (44-21 in 2012) and 0-1 against Appalachian State (17-10, OT, in 1994). All three of those matchups occurred when those schools were at the I-AA/FCS level.
UNH has recorded seven or more wins 13 consecutive years; the stretch began in 2004 (10-3) and includes six double-digit win seasons with a program-record 12 in 2014.
The Wildcats return 13 starters – six on offense and seven on defense – from last year's team that finished 8-5 overall and tied for second in the CAA standings at 6-2.
New Hampshire has lost seven consecutive matchups against FBS opponents, but the Wildcats did win five straight games against that competition spanning the 2004-09 seasons. The five consecutive wins were against Rutgers (35-24; 2004), Northwestern (34-17; 2006), Marshall (48-35; 2007), Army (28-10; 2008) and Ball State (23-16; 2009).
