Shanahan, Wildcats Edge out Dartmouth in Quad-Meet

Wildcats win the meet with 157 points, Nkounkou finishes second in Heptathlon.
HANOVER, N.H. – After breaking the school record in weight throw twice last weekend, senior thrower Michael Shanahan (Dover, N.H.) threw even further this weekend at Dartmouth, as the University of New Hampshire took first place in the quad-meet with a team score of 157.
Shanahan won the weight throw event with a record-setting throw of 70 feet, 5.75 inches, which is ranked third best in the country. He also came in second place in the shot put with a throw of 50'0.5". Zachary Astle (Newbury, N.H.) won the shot put, throwing 52 feet, two inches.
The Wildcats also found points in the middle distance events, specifically the 1000m run and the mile run. In the 1k, two wildcats took the top two spots; junior Cody Symonds (Alton, N.H.) and senior Seamus Sargeant (Fairpoint, N.Y.) finished first and second in two minutes, 34.56 seconds and two minutes, 35.07 seconds.
Senior Joel Nkounkou (Dover, N.H.) competed in the heptathlon on Friday evening, and finished in second overall with 5025 total points, earning seven for UNH's total. Individually he won the long jump (23'), the shot put (42'), and the 60m hurdles (8.47 seconds).
In the final team score, the Wildcats just edged out Dartmouth, 157 points to 151. Maine finished in third with 129 points and Vermont finished fourth with 115.
UP NEXT:
The Wildcats take a month off for the winter break but are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 20 for a home meet with Holy Cross at 12 p.m.

- New Hampshire's team of Aaron Dobe (Contoocook, N.H.), John Crawford (Mansfield, Mass.), Alexander Saveliev (Concord, N.H.), and James Busi (Plastow N.H.) won the 4x800 relay with a time of 8:13.58.
- In the pole vault, Alex Tamulonis (Mason, N.H.) won the event with a vault of 14 feet, 11 inches.
- Brandon Allen (East Elmhurst, N.Y.) took second in the 200m dash with 22.61 seconds.
- In the mile run, Saveliev also finished second with a time of four minutes, 23.28 seconds.
- In the 500m run, Matthew Adams (Concord, N.H.) finished third with 1:06.47.
- In the 800m run Joseph Poggi (Derry, N.H.) finished third with 1:56.71.
