DURHAM, N.H. - The defending America East champion University of New Hampshire women's soccer team (1-0-2) travels to Siena College (0-1-2) on Aug. 30 (1 p.m.) for the first road tilt of the season.
LAST TIME OUT FOR NEW HAMPSHIRE
UNH most recently defeated the College of Holy Cross (Aug. 27), 2-0, for the first victory of the season. Sophomore forward Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) led the charge with a two-goal effort, including a penalty kick finish in the 56th minute. Senior forward Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) created both scoring chances with an assist on the first tally and drawing the foul on the final penalty kick goal. The 'Cats outshot the Crusaders 13-6 and earned a 2-0 corner kick advantage.
LAST TIME OUT FOR SIENA
Siena most recently traveled to Cornell University where they pulled out a 0-0 draw in double-overtime. The Saints compiled three total shots as senior forward Cassy Landis registered two. Senior goaltender Liz Rogan notched eight saves on the night for the first shutout of her career.
ALL-TIME SERIES VS. SIENA
Siena controls the all-time series, 3-0, against the Wildcats. New Hampshire aims for its first victory against the Saints after dropping a game last year, 2-0, at home. Murphy buried a penalty kick chance in the 83rd minute but it was too late to make a comeback. Senior forward Cassy Landis returns for Siena as one of the goal scorers in last season's matchup.
SCOUTING THE WILDCATS
After scoring the first two goals of the season, the Wildcats aim to continue the scoring. Murphy leads the team with two goals for four points on 11 shots. Murray has an assist and nine shots thus far. Junior goalkeeper Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) has been huge in net with 16 saves through three games for a 310-minute scoreless streak.
SCOUTING THE SAINTS
Sophomore back Madison Vasquez leads the charge for Siena with five points (two goals, one assist) through three games. Senior midfielder Kirby O'Keefe ranks second with a goal on two shots. Rogan has played all three games in net with a 2.03 goals against average and 22 saves.
GOOSE EGGS
Borkan leads the America East with three shutouts through three games, the first time in the program's history. Last season, the Massachusetts Native put together a three-game shutout streak during a 1-0 win at Binghamton University (Oct. 19), a 2-0 victory at UMass Lowell (Oct. 23) and a 1-0 final score against Stony Brook University (Oct. 26). She tied the program record for shutouts in a season with nine last year.
NO-LOSS AUGUST
New Hampshire is unbeaten through three games, the best record since 2010 when they started the year 1-0-2. A 2-1 win against La Salle College (Aug. 27) and 1-1, double-overtime, ties against the University of Rhode Island (Aug. 24) and Rider University (Aug. 29) began the year. The 'Cats defeated Holy Cross, 3-1, on Sept. 3 before eventually losing 2-0 to Harvard University on Sept. 5. That season, New Hampshire was unbeaten in August, a chance the current 'Cats have with a tie or win against Siena.
FIRST HALF SURGE
Second-year head coach Steve Welham likes the first half energy the 'Cats have brought this season. The team is outshooting opponents 22-8 in the first half. Additionally, New Hampshire holds an 11-8 shot-on-goal advantage in the opening 45 minutes.
DUE UP NEXT
The Wildcats head to the University of Vermont for the TD Bank Classic tournament where they play Quinnipiac University on Sept. 4 (1:30 p.m.) and Kent State University on Sept. 6 (11 a.m.). The squad returns home Sept. 11 (7 p.m.) to host Temple University.
