DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire football team, under the guidance of 17th-year head coach Sean McDonnell, enters the 2015 season ranked in the Top 10 of two preseason national polls.
UNH, which won the 2014 CAA Football title outright en route to being ranked No. 1 in the nation and advancing to the NCAA semifinals with a school-record 12 consecutive victories, is ranked No. 7 in the Preseason FCS Coaches Poll as well as No. 9 in the STATS FCS Top 25 Preseason Poll.
The Wildcats were ranked in the Top 10 all 15 of the FCS Coaches Poll a year ago, and that included each of the last eight polls in the Top 5; the 'Cats climbed to No. 1 in the final regular-season poll.
Four-time defending national champion North Dakota State University and Illinois State University rank 1-2 in both preseason polls. CAA rival Villanova University is No. 3 in the FCS Coaches Poll, followed by Sam Houston State, Coastal Carolina and Eastern Washington; Villanova and Sam Houston State are reversed in the STATS FCS poll.
UNH checks in behind Eastern Washington at No. 7 in the FCS Coaches Poll, whereas Jacksonville State and Chattanooga are also ahead of the Wildcats in the STATS FCS Poll.
The 'Cats are one of four CAA teams in the Top 25. In addition to aforementioned Villanova, James Madison University is No. 13 in the coaches' poll and 12th in the STATS poll, and the University of Richmond is No. 18 in both polls.
UNH was selected third – behind 'Nova and JMU – in the CAA Football Preseason Poll that was released July 28.
New Hampshire kicks off the year Sept. 3 (10 p.m. Eastern) at FBS representative San Jose State University.
