Men's Alpine Win Propels Skiing to Second-Place Tie at EISA Championships (Day 1 of 2)

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. – The University of New Hampshire ski team posted an alpine victory in men's giant slalom, a second-place mark in women's GS and Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) finished runner-up in the women's Nordic 5K freestyle to propel the Wildcats into a second-place deadlock in the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships/St. Lawrence Carnival.
UNH and Dartmouth College are knotted up with 403 points apiece, and the University of Vermont is in first place with 487 points after Friday's opening day of the NCAA East Regional Championships.
The Wildcat men's alpine team totaled 112 points in GS at Whiteface Mountain to topple Middlebury College (109) and UVM (104). Phil Rivet (Saint-Lambert, Quebec) and Jay Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) led the charge by finishing third and fourth, respectively. Rivet clocked in at a combined time of 2 minutes, 9.37 seconds for 44 points, and Ogle, who recorded the second-fastest, first-run time (1:05.46), finished in a combined 2:09:46 for 41 points. Chad Lawrence (Hastings, Minn.) rounded out the scoring for the 'Cats by amassing 27 points in 2:10.31 (13th place).
Powered by a 3-4 finish from Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) and Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario), the women's alpine team scored 111 points to finish second to Vermont (134) in giant slalom. Wedsjö dashed to a time of 2:12.07 for 44 points, and Teschner clocked in at 2:12.33 to notch 41 points. Kelly DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) placed 15th in 2:14.64 for 26 points.
In the 5K free at Mt. Hoevenberg, Taylor posted a time of 16 minutes, 7.3 seconds to nab 47 points and finish runner-up to Middlebury's Heather Mooney. Katrin Larusson (Truckee, Calif.) finished in 10th place (16:46.9) for 31 points, and Maddy Pfeifer (Andover, N.H.) took home 13th place (28 points) in a time of 16:57.1. UNH totaled 106 points to finish in second behind UVM (124).
Raleigh Goessling (Esko, Minn.) recorded the fastest time among Wildcat men's Nordic skiers, finishing the 10K free in 29:15.6 for 33 points. Peter Holmes (Tahoe City, Calif.) crossed the line in 30:28.5 for 27th place (21 points), and Tyler Quinn Smith (Park City, Utah) earned 20 points by virtue of his tie for 28th place in 30:32.5. The Wildcats finished in fifth place (74 points) in a race won by Dartmouth (133).
The EISA Championships conclude Saturday, Feb. 28, with the men's 20K classic mass start (9:30 a.m.), the women's 15K class mass start (11:30 a.m.), the men's slalom (9:30 a.m.) and the women's slalom (10:30 a.m.). For more information, visit eisaskiing.blogspot.com.
