Oliver's Slalom Win Powers Skiing to Second Place at Middlebury Carnival (Day 1 of 2)

RIPTON & HANCOCK Vt. – Coley Oliver (Salt Lake City, Utah) registered his first career Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association victory –and the season's first alpine win for the University of New Hampshire skiing team—to lead the Wildcats to second place overall after Friday's first day of racing at the Middlebury Carnival.
UNH has amassed 407 points to place behind the University of Vermont (458 points) among 16 teams. Dartmouth College (389), Middlebury College (381) and Colby College (309) round out the Top-5.
Oliver paired a first-run time of 44.01 seconds with a second run of 46.80 for a combined finish of 1 minute, 30.81 seconds (50 points) at Middlebury Snow Bowl. That was nearly a full minute (0.56 seconds) faster than the nearest competitor and propelled the 'Cats to 115 team points for second place in men's SL, behind UVM (124 points). Chris Steinke (Ottawa, Ontario) finished in sixth place (37 points) in 1:32.71 to notch his second Top-10 result of the season, and Charlie Kidd (Toronto, Ontario) took 13th place (28 points) in 1:33.16 to edge teammate Jay Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) by 0.11 seconds.
The Wildcat women's alpine team produced a pair of Top-10 finishers –Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario) and Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden). Teschner, who entered the race ranked seventh in the East on slalom, zoomed to a combined time of 1:42.05 for fourth place and 41 points. It was her third Top-5 SL finish this season. Wedsjö finished ninth in 1:44.00 for 31 points and her second straight Top-10 SL placement. Celine Guilmineau (Edwards, Colo.) clocked in at 1:46.47 for 17th place (26 points). UNH scored 98 points to finish fourth in a race won by UVM (119).
At Rikert Touring Center, Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) finished 9.8 seconds behind Heather Mooney of Middlebury for second place in the women's 10K classic. Taylor's time of 31 minutes, 11.0 seconds earned her 47 points and the No. 2 overall ranking in the East. Hannah Peterson (Durango, Colo.) finished in 33:18.9 for 14th place (26 points), and Maddy Pfeifer (Andover, N.H.) crossed the line in 33:34.7 for 20th place (23 points). New Hampshire finished fourth with 96 points; Middlebury took the top score with 112 points.
Per Lindgren (Pitea, Sweden) recorded his second Top-5 classic finish of the year to spearhead the men's Nordic team's third-place finish (98 points) in the 10K classic. Lindgren finished in fourth place in a time of 26:41.3 for 41 points. EISA's No 7-ranked classic skier Raleigh Goessling (Esko, Minn.) tied for ninth place in 27:04.8 for 31 points, and fifth-ranked classic competitor Eirik Fosnaes (Hovik, Norway) earned 26 points by virtue of his 16th-place finish (27:30.1).
The Middlebury Carnival concludes Saturday, Feb. 14, with the women's 5K skate (10 a.m.) and men's 10K skate (11:30 a.m.) at Rikert Nordic Center.
