BOSTON - Ronnel Jordan (San Antonio, Texas) led a quintet of double-digit scorers with 16 points, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team dropped a 78-74 decision at Boston University on Monday night at Case Gym.
UNH slips to 7-5 on the season with a non-conference loss to Boston U., which ups its record to 6-6.
The Wildcats stormed back in the final frame after being down 10, 64-54, with 7:15 to play. Junior Jaleen Smith (Freeport, Texas) hit two free-throw attempts followed by a sophomore Tanner Leissner (Converse, Texas) layup to trail 64-58 with 6:24 to go. A John Papale 3-pointer was erased by a layup by sophomore Iba Camara (Dakar, Senegal) and two more Smith free throws but the Wildcats remained down, 67-62, with 4:21 left.
UNH closed within two, 74-72, with 57 seconds on a Jordan put back in the paint. Papale hit a layup on the other end but junior Jacoby Armstrong (Sachse, Texas) hit one of his own two freebies, to inch within two with 22 seconds to play. On the Terrier inbound, the Wildcats were called for a foul sending Eric Fanning to the line, as he hit the second attempt to take a 77-74 lead with 16 seconds left. Dion tried to shake the defense on the other end but was unable to get a clean look on the game-tying shot.
Jordan scored his 16 points on 6 of 12 shooting from the field. Dion tallied 13 points on 5 of 12 shooting including three 3-pointers. Armstrong and Smith notched 11 points apiece followed by Leissner with 10. Camara finished with eight points and 10 boards.
No team led by more than two points in the opening half until 11:43 when Smith drilled a jumper to take a 17-13 lead. BU then scored seven straight to reclaim the lead, 20-17. Eric Johnson and Fanning nailed a 3-pointer and layup, respectively, and Cheddi Mosely closed the run with two free throws.
The Wildcats crept back to tie it up, 24-24, as Daniel Dion drilled a deep jumper and then a trey following a Leissner bucket in the paint.
The Terriers took a 35-28 lead with 3:16 to play in the opening stanza before Dion rattled off back-to-back threes to narrow the deficit to one with 2:27 remaining.
A last second heave from beyond half wouldn't go for UNH as the first-half score stood at 39-36.
BU gave up 14 turnovers giving the Wildcats a 15-6 point-off-turnover advantage. Also, 16 offensive rebounds for the Wildcats, led by Armstrong and Camara with four each, helped the 'Cats hold a 16-6 lead in the second-chance-points battle.
Fannning led BU with 18 points. Papale recorded all 13 of his points in the final frame.
New Hampshire takes a little break for the holiday season before heading back into Boston to tackle Boston College on Wednesday, Dec. 30 (7 p.m.) on ESPN3. The Wildcats host Binghamton University on Saturday, Jan. 9 to begin the 2016 year and America East play.
