DURHAM, N.H. – Sophomore Brooke Murphy (Monson, Mass.) scored her 11th goal on the season but the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the University of Maine in overtime, Thursday night at Bremner Field.
The Wildcats dropped to 6-7-3 overall and 4-2-0 in conference. The Black Bears improved their record to 8-5-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference to creep higher in the standings for the home playoff positions.
Murphy tallied five shots on the night. Senior Caroline Murray (New Canaan, Conn.) rifled four shots and dished an assist on the Murphy tally. Junior Mimi Borkan (Medfield, Mass.) made three saves in net, dropping her record to 6-7-3 on the season.
For Maine, sophomore Kaitlin Saulter scored the game-winner and freshman Jenna Soucy scored the equalizer. Senior Charlene Achille recorded an assist in the first-half goal. Freshman Vivien Beil and Anetra Byfield each recorded three shots. Junior Claudia Dube-Trempe made three saves in net, improving her record to 8-4-1 overall.
With 28:25 left in the first half, the Black Bear's Beil notched the first scoring chance when she took a shot from 25 yards out that danced in the air. Borkan was forced to punch it over the post with her extended left hand.
Murphy recorded her 11th of the season when Murray dribbled into the box and chipped a pass between defenders. Murphy finished bottom left to take a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute.
Maine quickly answered when Soucy ripped a rocket from 30 yards out that bounced off the left post and in to even the score, 1-1, in the 28th minute. Achille dished a through ball for her second assist on the year. The score would remain tied going into halftime.
Following a deadlocked second half, the overtime period was short-lived as Saulter picked up a loose ball just outside the Wildcat box and ripped a shot to the left side of the net for the game-winner.
New Hampshire will travel to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Sunday, Oct. 18 (1 p.m.) and then to the University of Hartford on Oct. 22 (6 p.m.) to close out the regular season.
