Men's Nordic Victory Propels Skiing to Third Place at St. Michael's Carnival (Day 1 of 2)

HUNTINGTON & SMUGGLERS' NOTCH, Vt. – Eirik Fosnaes (Hovik, Norway) posted a second-place finish in Friday's 10K classic to propel the University of New Hampshire men's Nordic team to a victory in that race, and the Wildcat skiing team claimed third place overall halfway through the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association's St. Michael's Carnival.
With 376 points, UNH trails Vermont (466) and Dartmouth (380), while Middlebury (359) and Colby (309) round out the top five.
At Sleepy Hollow, the Wildcats totaled 112 points to edge UVM (109) in the men's 10K classic. Fosnaes, who earned 47 points, pushed across the finish line in 31 minutes, 13.9 seconds, which was 6.3 seconds behind race winner Fabian Stocek of Dartmouth. Per Lindgren (Pitea, Sweden) recorded his second straight Top-10 result by finishing in sixth place (32:20.0) for 37 points, and Sam Reed (Keene, N.H.) notched 28 points by tallying a 12th-place time of 32:32.3.
Katrin Larusson (Truckee, Calif.) headlined the UNH women's Nordic competitors with a fourth-place finish in the 5K classic. Larusson, who registered her third consecutive Top-10 result, clocked in at 17:53.6 for 41 points. Maddy Pfeifer (Andover, N.H.) racked up a career-best 15th-place finish in 18:30.5 for 25 points, and Tristan Ramey (Anchorage, Alaska) scored 23 points by tying teammate Hannah Peterson (Durango, Colo.) for 17th place in a time of 18:35.3. The 'Cats amassed 89 points to finish in third place, behind Middlebury (118) and Vermont (113).
At Smugglers' Notch, Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) made it two straight weeks with a third-place finish in giant slalom. Wedsjö timed in at 55.32 seconds in her initial run and followed up with a time of 57.91 in her afternoon run for a combined time of 1:53.23, which was just 3.4 seconds off the pace set by winner Kristina Riis-Johannessen of Vermont. Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario) paired a first run of 56.27 with a follow-up of 58.38 for a combined time of 1:54.65 for 13th place (28 points), and Kelly DiNapoli (Ludlow, Vt.) posted a two-run time of 1:55.98 for 18th place (25 points). The Wildcats compiled 97 points to finish behind UVM (134) and Dartmouth (103).
Jay Ogle (Pittsfield, Mass.) was the top 'Cat in the men's GS with a combined time of 1:51.25 for third place and 44 points; Ogle was a mere 1.02 seconds behind winner Robert Cone of Middlebury. Chris Steinke (Ottawa, Ontario) crossed the line in 1:53.01 for 20th place (22 points), and Coley Oliver (Salt Lake City, Utah) picked up 12 points by finishing in 32nd place (1:55.12). New Hampshire finished fourth in men's giant slalom with 78 points; Vermont (110), Dartmouth (101) and Middlebury (96) took the top three spots.
