Skiing Finishes Fourth at Bates Carnival

NEWRY & RUMFORD, Maine – Annika Taylor (Truckee, Calif.) recorded her second runner-up finish in as many races and the University of New Hampshire skiing team finished fourth overall (of 16 teams) at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association's Bates Carnival, which concluded Saturday.
With 706 points, UNH placed behind carnival winner Vermont (914), Dartmouth (854) and Middlebury (720).
Taylor, who finished second to Middlebury's Heather Mooney in Friday's 15K classic mass start race, was runner-up to Mooney again in Saturday's 5K freestyle at Black Mountain. The senior co-captain tallied 47 points in a time of 13 minutes, 54.3 seconds, just 2.3 seconds off the pace. Katrin Larusson (Truckee, Calif.) chipped in 29 points courtesy of her 12th-place finish of 14:48.9, and Tristan Ramey (Anchorage, Alaska) secured 19 points by finishing in 27th place (15:28.0). With 95 points, the Wildcats finished in third place behind Middlebury (119) and UVM (111).
In the men's 10K free, Raleigh Goessling (Esko, Minn.) set the pace for UNH Nordic skiers for the second day in a row. Goessling placed fourth in a time of 24:17.9 for 41 points. Eirik Fosnaes (Hovik, Norway) tallied a time of 25:25.5 for 18th place (24 points), and Gavin Hess (Rochester, N.Y.) finished 22nd in 25:43.8 (21 points). The Wildcats finished in third place with 86 points, behind Dartmouth (129) and Vermont (101).
Randa Teschner (Petawawa, Ontario) paced the women's alpine team with a fifth-place finish in the slalom at Sunday River. Teschner recorded a combined time of 1 minute, 49.15 seconds for 39 points. Lisa Wedsjö (Saltsjöbaden, Sweden) collected 28 points (12th place) by clocking in at 1:51.54, and Morgan Klein (Oregon, Wis.) claimed 14th place in 1:51.91 (26 points). The Wildcats finished in fourth place (93 points) in women's SL, which was won by UVM (120).
The men's alpine team accrued 70 points to finish sixth in SL. Coley Oliver (Salt Lake City, Utah) was the top 'Cat; the senior tied for 10th place in a time of 1:46.05 for 31 points. Philippe Rivet (Saint-Lambert, Quebec) placed 17th (24 points) in 1:46.55, and Bryan Cookson (Vernon, British Columbia) came in at 1:51.30 for 29th place (15 points). Vermont made it an alpine sweep with 135 points.
