VOLLEYBALL SWEEPS PAST HARTFORD

DURHAM, N.H. – Kirsten Bates (Calgary,
Alberta) and Lindsay Fogarty (Pleasanton, Calif.)
posted 14 and 10 kills, respectively, to lead the University of New
Hampshire volleyball team to a 3-0 victory over the University of
Hartford, Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gymnasium. The set scores
were 25-16, 25-14 and 25-16.
In addition to Bates and Fogarty, Jessy Dick
(Lethbridge, Alberta) notched four kills and three service aces,
while Justine Elliott (Mitchellville, Md.) added
four kills and Jayde Huxtable (St. Charles, Ill.)
tallied three service aces. Defensively, Sara Heldman (Greenwood,
Ind.) and Jessie Schnepp (East Longmeadow, Mass.)
led the way for the 'Cats compiling 10 and seven digs,
respectively.
In the first set, the Wildcats jumped out to an early 5-2 lead,
however, the Hawks would slowly chip away at the lead, eventually
making it an 11-9 game. New Hampshire would answer the call scoring
seven unanswered points, putting the score at 18-9. The Wildcats
would close the door on the Hawks in the remainder of the set,
capturing the nine-point win. UNH had 15 kills and hit a match-best
.333 clip.
For the early portion of the second set, the Wildcats and Hawks
traded blows with a 5-4 score, but UNH would soon pull away scoring
11 unanswered points, making it 16-4. The Hawks would claw their
way back into the match, cutting the lead down to seven, with the
score 20-13. Despite the late charge, the 'Cats were able to
hold onto the lead and shutdown the Hawks for good scoring five
straight points to end the match.
The Wildcats would carry that momentum into the third set as they
steamrolled to 21-10 advantage, but the Hawks would not go down
without a fight as they scored six straight points, cutting
UNH's lead down to five, with the score 21-16. From there,
UNH would buckle down and finish the match scoring five unanswered
points, putting away the Hawks for good.
The Wildcats return to action Friday, Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. when they
hit the road to take on the University at Albany.
