UNH Athletics-UNH Sustainability Institute Partner for Nov. 14 MHOC game vs Union
DURHAM, N.H. – On November 14, UNH Men's Hockey fans will have an opportunity to support a fellow Wildcat student-athlete who is passionate about making a difference.
Skate to Zero Waste, a sustainability-focused initiative taking place during UNH Men's Hockey's 7pm game against Union at the Whittemore Center at Key Auto Group Complex, was created by Maddie Serfass, a member of the UNH Women's Swimming & Diving team and a UNH Sustainability Fellow. The project grew from a simple question: how can a UNH student-athlete use the platform of athletics to make a positive impact beyond competition?
Working alongside UNH Athletics and the UNH Sustainability Institute, Serfass developed Skate to Zero Waste as a way to encourage small actions that can make a meaningful difference, while showcasing the power of student leadership in action. The initiative reflects UNH's broader commitment to sustainability and experiential learning, where students are encouraged to apply their ideas to real-world challenges.
"As a student-athlete, I wanted to find a way to connect my passion for sustainability with athletics and make a positive impact on our campus. This work started as a simple dream and ambition, and I could not be more honored to be part of this initiative," Serfass said. "Sports bring so many people together and truly unite a community around a shared spirit. I hope Skate to Zero Waste encourages fans to think about sustainability in their everyday lives while still enjoying everything that makes a UNH hockey game so special. Go Wildcats!"
Throughout the evening, fans will see sustainability-themed elements incorporated into the gameday experience, including educational activities and opportunities to help reduce waste inside the Whittemore Center. The goal is not to change what makes a UNH hockey night special, but to demonstrate how a student-led idea can make that experience even better.
"Maddie represents the best of what makes UNH unique," said Fumi Kimura, Deputy Director of Athletics. "She's a Division I student-athlete, a Sustainability Fellow, and someone who wanted to take an idea and turn it into action. Skate to Zero Waste is a chance for the UNH community to rally around one of our own and support something she's worked hard to build."
The initiative also aligns with the mission of the UNH Sustainability Institute, which serves as a catalyst for sustainability ideas and actions across campus and beyond. UNH has long been recognized as a national leader in sustainability and is one of a select group of institutions to earn the highest STARS Platinum sustainability rating.
For hockey fans, however, the focus remains simple:
Come to the Whitt. Cheer on the Wildcats. Support a fellow student-athlete who's trying to make a difference.
