WAKEFIELD, Mass. – Junior goaltender Matt Di Girolamo (Ambler, Pa.) of the University of New Hampshire men's hockey team was named Hockey East Pure Hockey Defensive Player of the Week. The announcement was made Monday by the league office. Di Girolamo earns the award for the third this season, which is tied for the most in Hockey East.
Di Girolamo, who was the league's top defensive player on Oct. 18 and Dec. 6, turned away 56-of-60 shots to lift UNH to a weekend sweep of Vermont in the Hockey East quarterfinals this past weekend. He posted a 2.00 goals against average and a .933 save percentage for the weekend in the two-game series at the Whittemore Center.
Overall, Di Girolamo ranks in the top three in Hockey East in every goaltending category. He ranks first in minutes (2184:52), sits second in save percentage (.922) and saves (1,057), while his 2.47 goals against average and 21 wins rank third.
UNH returns to action Friday, March 18 (8 p.m.) in the Hockey East semifinals against fourth-seeded Merrimack College at TD Garden in Boston.
