Getting to Know: Mariam Nada

Get to know freshman sprinter Mariam Nada (Portsmouth, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire women's track and field team.
Mariam was born and raised in Alexandria, Egypt and now lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.
"In my eyes, Alexandria is the city that never sleeps," Mariam said. "You can go anywhere and eat anything at any hour of the day or night."
Two fun facts about Mariam are that she has always lived by the water and speaks fluent Arabic.
Mariam said her biggest inspirations are her parents, "They taught me everything I know—sacrifice, love, understanding—and always give me the space I need to learn more."
She explained that her passion for running is something that came to fruition after moving to the United States.
"I used to play handball back home, and running was more of a side sport," Mariam said. "When I moved here, I developed a passion for it. It became the way I assimilated and met the people I now hold dearest."
Outside of running, Mariam loves photography, reading and listening to old Arabic music. She is also very passionate about learning and shared that in the future she hopes to study humanitarian law or continue her research in academia.
"Learning is something deeply ingrained in my family, and I can't see myself ever settling without constantly pursuing it," Mariam said.
If there is one thing that Mariam can't live without it would be her faith.
"Islam and religion are fundamental to my identity—they provide comfort as well as constant fascination," Mariam explained.
When asked what advice Mariam has for incoming UNH first-year students she said, "Go out of your way to meet people!"
"Clubs, sports and events might sound cliché, but through them, you meet people who both affirm and challenge you, helping you grow as a person," Mariam said.
