Silver Named to Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List

DURHAM, N.H. – Junior defensive end Josiah Silver (Hampton, Va.) of the University of New Hampshire football team was named to the Buck Buchanan Award Preseason Watch List on Thursday.
The Buck Buchanan Award, presented by FedEx Ground, is given annually to the national defensive player of the year in Division I FCS. Silver is one of 14 defensive linemen and 35 players overall named to the initial Watch List.
First awarded in 1995, past recipients of the Buck Buchanan Award include UNH's Matt Evans in 2011.
Silver has been named to four preseason All-America Teams, including Stats Perform earlier this week. He also received recognition from Athlon, HERO Sports and The Bluebloods.
UNH, ranked No. 8 in the Athlon and 14th in the HERO Sports preseason polls, kicks off the 2023 season Sept. 2 at Stonehill College. The Wildcats' home opener is Sept. 16 against Dartmouth College.

Silver was named to four All-America postseason teams in 2022. He was also selected to the New England Football Writers All-New England Team and the CAA All-Conference First Team as a defensive lineman.
Silver ranked 17th in the national rankings in tackles for loss and 12th in blocked kicks. On the CAA leaderboard, Silver was sixth in tackles for loss per game and fifth in sacks per game.
Silver led UNH with 17.5 tackles for loss and ranked second in sacks (8.5), as well as third in tackles (55) and tied for third in quarterback hurries (four). He blocked two punts, one of which was returned for a touchdown and the other resulted in a safety. Silver had 10 games with 4+ tackles and recorded at least one tackle for loss in 11 of 13 games.
Silver's season highlights included a season-high 3.5 tackles for loss vs. Stony Brook and 3.0 tackles for loss at nationally-ranked Richmond. He made a season-high seven tackles in the NCAA first round vs. Fordham and forced a fumble on the opening possession of the game. Silver went on to record six tackles, a fumble recovery, QB hurry and blocked punt in the NCAA second round at Holy Cross.
In the 2022 season, New Hampshire won a share of the CAA title with a 7-1 conference record and advanced to the NCAA second round to highlight a highly-successful season that ended with a 9-4 overall record and No. 13/15 national ranking.
