Gymnasts Kick Off Whittemore Center Run on Sunday at 2
DURHAM, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire gymnastics team hit the road last weekend and kicked off the 2023 season with a meet at the University of Southern Utah on Monday night.
Sunday, the Wildcats open the home portion of their schedule with a tri-meet against Temple and Central Michigan in the Whittemore Center at 2 p.m. Ticket information is available at www.unhwildcats.com and the event will be streamed live on YouTube.
UNH has switched things up a bit for this season and five of the team's six home meets will be in the Whitt, capped by the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships on Saturday, March 18.
Previously, the Wildcats held their meets primarily across Main Street in Lundholm Gymnasium with the occasional contest in the Whitt.
Coach Lindsey Bruck Ayotte likes the change of venue and is looking forward to showcasing a talented team this year.
"We've got a great team this year," Ayotte said. "I love the passion they have for the sport and the university, just to do well and really show who they are, what they're capable of. I'm excited. I want them to do as well as they've been doing this fall and show everybody that they're a pretty special team."
The talent and depth the Wildcats have shown through the fall and into the winter are creating a challenge for the coaching staff, the coach said.
"Right now, we're in a tough position," she said. "We probably have at least eight routines on each event that we can pick from and we have to pick the top six. It's a good problem to have, but it's tough. Whoever's warming up better that day, those are the top six that are going to go."
Senior co-captains Robyn Kelley, who returned to action for the first time in almost two years against Southern Utah, and Kenadi Brown, are among the leaders of the team. Kelley missed last season with an Achilles injury. She was sixth in beam at Southern Utah.
Senior Kylie Gorgenyi won the vault in last week's meet and tied for second on bars.
Sophomore Alyssa Beaulieu turned in a personal best score of 9.875 to tie for second in floor exercise in the opener and was runnerup in all-around.
On Friday, the Wildcats head to Towson for a quad meet with West Virginia and West Chester.
They return home to face Penn, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Yale in a National Girls & Women in Sports Day meet on Sunday, Jan. 29 at 1 p.m. in Lundholm.
All regular season home meets after that are on Sunday afternoons in the Whittemore Center.
UNH has its Stick It for the Cure meet against George Washington, Long Island University and North Carolina on Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1 p.m.; Illinois State, Pittsburgh and Southern Connecticut are in Sunday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m.;The Wildcats compete against Brown on Alumni Day, Sunday, March 12 at 2 p.m.
The EAGLs are Saturday, March 18 with sessions at 1 and 7 p.m.
