Sheppard Records Six Saves in 1-0 Loss at Northeastern

BROOKLINE, Mass. – Senior goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) recorded six saves, but the University of New Hampshire women's soccer team was defeated 1-0 by Northeastern University at Parsons Field on Thursday night.
Sheppard, the reigning America East Defensive Player of the Week, was credited with three saves in both halves. NU counterpart Megan Adams made three saves – all in the second half – to earn the shutout.
Mikenna McManus netted the game's only goal in the 38th minute.
UNH is now 1-1-0 overall, and Northeastern improves to 2-1-0.

FIRST HALF
- NU's Ashley Reuter recorded the first shot of the game in the third minute, but Sheppard stopped the ball that was heading for the top-right quadrant of the goal.
- The Huskies earned the first corner kick of the game in the ninth minute, and that produced a shot by Reuter wide of the cage.
- Sophomore Ella Dudley (St. Augustine, Fla.) recorded UNH's first shot attempt of the game in the 19th minute, but it was off target.
- Northeastern generated another dangerous scoring chance in the 32nd minute on its fourth corner of the game, but Halle McCabe's shot was stopped by Sheppard.
- McManus struck a left-footed shot into the top-left of the goal to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead at 37:34. Alexis Legowski was credited with the assist.
- Neither team recorded a shot the rest of the half.
SECOND HALF
- New Hampshire recorded its first shot of the game on target when freshman Meghan Guarente (Sewell, N.J.) was denied by Adams in the opening minute of the second half.
- Legowski fired a shot off target in the 54th minute and then again in the 57th minute.
- In the 59th minute, freshman Abbie Burgess (Killingly, Conn.) was also turned aside by NU's Adams on her bid to the top-left of the net.
- Sheppard denied Eleanor Fisher's high shot in the 60th minute, and moments later Sheppard kept the margin at one goal by stopping Fisher's low shot toward the center of the net.
- Burgess recorded another shot in the 68th minute, but this time the attempt was off target to the left.
- In the 71st minute, McManus' bid to the bottom left was stopped by Sheppard.
- Dudley was denied by Adams on a shot to the lower left corner in the 79th minute.
- The Wildcats had one more scoring opportunity in the final minute, but Burgess' shot sailed wide of the left post.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Northeastern finished with the edge in shots (16-7), shots on goal (7-3) and corner kicks (5-0).
- NU generated an 8-2 shot advantage, including 4-0 on goal, in the first half. The Huskies recorded all four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
- Dudley recorded both of UNH's first-half shots and matched Burgess – as well as three Huskies – with a game-high three shots in the game.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- UNH's second game of the season was initially scheduled to be Aug. 22 against Sacred Heart University, but the match was cancelled.
SERIES NOTEBOOK
- UNH has an 8-11-4 lifetime record against Northeastern. The Wildcats were unbeaten (2-0-1) the previous three meetings in the series since the Huskies' previous win in 2016.
- The Wildcats prevailed 1-0 this past February at Wildcat Stadium.
- Including Thursday night at NU, eight of the last 10 matches have been decided by one goal; the other two ended in a tie.
- Five of the last 10 meetings have ended with a 1-0 score, including the past two.
