INDIANAPOLIS – University of New Hampshire gymnasts Kylie Gorgenyi (North Reading, Mass.), Robyn Kelley (Wakefield, Mass.), Hailey Lui (Collegeville, Pa.) and Alyssa Worthington (West Warwick, R.I.) each qualified for the 2021 NCAA Gymnastics Morgantown Regional, hosted April 1-3 by West Virginia University, the NCAA announced Monday.
The four Wildcats will compete as individual event specialists Friday, April 2 (7 p.m.) during the second session of the second round of the Morgantown Regional at WVU Coliseum. They will be facing No. 4 Michigan, No. 13 UCLA, Kent State and the winner of the Thursday, April 1, first-round matchup between host WVU and Penn State.
Gorgenyi qualified on vault and uneven bars, Kelley will compete on balance beam and floor exercise, while Lui and Worthington each qualified on beam.
The top 36 teams in the RoadtoNationals.com rankings, based on National Qualifying Score (NQS), reach NCAA Regionals. UNH was ranked 35th nationally before COVID-related protocols compelled the school to withdraw from last Saturday's EAGL Championship at the University of Pittsburgh. Without the benefit of that additional meet, the Wildcats were unable to defend their 2019 EAGL title and subsequently slipped to No. 38 (195.719 NQS), just 0.05 points away from qualifying as a team.
Gorgenyi, a sophomore, was tabbed All-EAGL First Team on vault, bars and all-around this season. Prior to last weekend, Gorgenyi was tied for fifth in EAGL with a 9.850 vault NQS, which included hitting for a career-high 9.875 three times (Jan. 22, Feb. 21, March 6). The native of North Reading, Mass., also tied for fifth on bars (9.863 NQS), which included a personal-best-matching 9.875 on Feb. 21 and Feb. 26.
Kelley, the EAGL Specialist of the Year, earned All-EAGL First Team on vault, balance beam and floor exercise. Prior to EAGLs, the sophomore was tied for No. 3 in EAGL on beam (9.894) and was ranked No. 2 on floor (9.900). The Wakefield, Mass., native averaged a 9.890 on floor in her last four meets, highlighted by a career-high 9.925 in a March 14 tri-meet victory at Towson. Her career-high 9.900 on beam occurred Senior Day (March 6) at Lundholm Gym.
Lui, a junior, garnered All-EAGL First Team on beam and floor for the second year in a row. The Collegeville, Pa., native tallied a 9.894 NQS on beam to equal Kelley for No. 3 in the league, and her 9.875 NQS on floor tied for No. 4. Lui has scored a season-high 9.900 on beam three times, including each of the last two meets, and she twice scored a personal-best 9.900 on floor (Feb. 21, March 6).
Worthington made the most of her one event by earning All-EAGL First Team on beam with a 9.869 NQS (T-No. 5). The sophomore matched her career high with a 9.900 on Feb. 21 and averaged a 9.860 over her last three meets.
The other NCAA Regionals are the Athens Regional (Georgia), Salt Lake City Regional (Utah) and the Tuscaloosa Regional (Alabama).
The top two teams and the top all-around competitor (who is not on an advancing team) from each of the four NCAA Regional sites will receive an automatic berth to the national championships. In addition, the top event specialist at each regional site who is not part of an advancing team or all-around competitor, will advance to the national championships in that event only.
The NCAA Championships will take place April 16-17 in Fort Worth, Texas at Dickies Arena. The championship event is hosted by Texas Woman's University and Knight Eady.
