BOSTON Â -- Junior Finn Caron (Hampton, N.H.) and redshirt freshman Nikki Tredwell (Hampton, N.H.) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey swept the three America East weekly awards as announced Tuesday by the conference.
Â
Tredwell was honored as both the Defensive Player of the Week and the Rookie of the Week, while Caron was tabbed Offensive Player of the Week. The Wildcat duo led UNH to a 3-1 victory against UMass in the Feb. 26 season-opening 3-1 victory at Memorial Field.
Â
In her first collegiate game and start, Tredwell stopped five of six shots on goal vs. UMass. After allowing a goal on the first shot 3:03 into the game, Tredwell was a stone wall the rest of the game to earn her first career win.
Â
In the closing minute of the second quarter, she made a key save on a close-range shot from the left side and then also stopped the rebound attempt from the middle of the circle to keep UNH's deficit at one goal going into halftime. Four minutes after the Wildcats surged to a 3-1 lead in the third quarter, Tredwell's left leg pad save prevented UMass from regaining momentum.
Caron scored the game-winning goal in the 3-1 victory. She scored the second of three UNH goals in a span of 3 minutes, 4 seconds that transformed a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead. UNH tied the score at 33:00, then Caron scored off a rebound from 10 feet in front of the cage to give the Wildcats a 2-1 lead at 35:16; UNH's flurry of goals ended at 36:04. Caron finished the game with two shots, one on goal.
Â
This is the second career America East Offensive Player of the Week accolade for Caron. She was previously feted Sept. 17, 2019.
UNH is scheduled to return to action March 3 at home against Merrimack College. Game time at Memorial Field is 2 p.m.
