The Matchup
New Hampshire and No. 2-ranked Northeastern University face off in the 2021 Hockey East Championship quarterfinals on Sunday, Feb. 28 at Matthews Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. on NESN.
UNH is the tournament's eighth seed and advanced out of the opening round with a 3-0 victory against ninth-seeded Holy Cross this past Thursday at the Whittemore Center.
Northeastern is the tourney's top seed.
Sunday night's game will the 150th meeting between two of the oldest women's hockey programs in college hockey. The Wildcats hold the overall series lead, 79-60-10, but NU has an 11-0-1 edge the past 12 meetings.
This will be the seventh Hockey East tournament meeting between UNH and NU. The Huskies hold the 4-2 edge.
In the most recent matchup (Feb. 14 at Matthews Arena), Northeastern broke open a close game with three goals in less than three minutes at 9:42, 10:47 and 12:28 to build a 4-0 advantage. The Wildcats struck at 16:25 to close the scoring. UNH redshirt junior goalie Ava Boutilier stopped 38 shots with 15 saves in the second period and 16 more in the third.
In Game 1 of that weekend series (Feb. 13 at the Whittemore Center), UNH closed within 3-1 in the third period but Northeastern netted three late goals, including empty-netters at 17:22 and 18:01, to pull away for a 6-1 win.
The teams also played a home-and-home series in January. UNH rallied for a 2-2 tie at the Whitt on Jan. 9 and, for the extra point in the traditional Hockey East standings, won the shootout 1-0 in five rounds.
One day earlier, the Huskies scored an empty-net goal with 22 seconds remaining to record a 3-1 win at Matthews Arena (despite a season-high 39 saves, 22 of which were in the third period, from Boutilier).
Wildcat Duo Receives Hockey East Annual Awards
Junior Lindsey Dumond received the Best Defensive Forward Award and Nicole Kelly was voted to the All-Rookie Team as announced by Hockey East on Friday. Dumond is the first UNH Wildcat to earn that accolade.
Tourney Time
UNH is making its 18th appearance in the 19-year history of the Hockey East tournament. The Wildcats won four consecutive tourney titles spanning the 2006-09 seasons and are making their ninth straight league tournament appearance in 2021.
New Hampshire has a 15-18 all-time record in Hockey East postseason play that includes 5-12 on the road. The Wildcats went 2-0 on the road last season by sweeping Providence College in the best-of-three quarterfinal series. Prior to that, the 'Cats had lost six consecutive quarterfinal road games.
