Sophomore tied PB and topped podium on vault, uneven bars in home win vs LIU
STEUBENVILLE, Ohio – University of New Hampshire gymnast Kylie Gorgenyi (North Reading, Mass.) set the tone in the Wildcats' Feb. 21 victory over Long Island University by matching career-high scores and finishing first on both vault and uneven bars, and the sophomore was rewarded Tuesday when she was named the EAGL Specialist of the Week.
This marks the first career EAGL weekly honor for Gorgenyi, who scored a 9.875 on vault and bars to help UNH (3-1, 2-1 EAGL) register a season-high score of 195.350 at Lundholm Gym.
For the season, the native of North Reading, Mass., is ranked second in the league on vault (9.867 average), fifth on bars (9.825), and fourth in all-around (38.825).
Gorgenyi made the most of her two events after missing the Feb. 13 meet at LIU. For the season, she has placed first on vault in all three meets in which she's competed to go along with two first-place results on vault and two all-around firsts.
The Wildcats will travel to Long Island for a pair of meets this weekend. UNH meets LIU and Towson in a tri-meet Friday, Feb. 26 (6 p.m.) before Pittsburgh joins those three schools for a 4 p.m. Sunday quad-meet. Each meet is slated for the Pratt Recreation Center in Brookville, N.Y.
UPDATE ON EAGL REGULAR-SEASON CHAMPIONSHIP
EAGL announced that the 2021 regular season champion will be the team with the highest National Qualifying Score (NQS) prior to the 2021 EAGL Championship meet (March 20). UNH shared the inaugural EAGL regular season championship with North Carolina State last season based on head-to-head records. Due to competitive limitations caused by COVID-19, coaches elected to switch from head-to-head format to NQS, which can be followed on RoadToNationals.com.
