Torres Scores 16 Points in 82-53 Loss at Maine

ORONO, Maine -- Senior guard Amanda Torres (Hudson, N.H.) scored a team-high 16 points and junior forward Ivy Gogolin (Hopkinton, Mass.) netted 14, but the University of New Hampshire women's basketball team lost to the University of Maine, 82-53, in Saturday afternoon's regular-season finale at Memorial Gym.
Along with 16 points, Torres added three rebounds and one assist. Torres shot 66.7 percent from the field and made all three of her 3-point attempts. Gogolin added four rebounds on top of 14 points.
Maine was led by Blanca Millan and Anne Simon with 21 points apiece. Both Millan and Simon were one rebound shy from a double-double with nine boards.
The Wildcats fall to 5-14 overall and 5-11 in America East, while the Black Bears improve to 16-2, 13-2. UNH is one of two teams to defeat Maine in the regular season, but the Black Bears won the season series (2-1).

FIRST QUARTER
- Torres scored the first point of the game with one free throw but that proved to be UNH's only lead of the game as Maine rolled out to a 24-9 lead through 10 minutes.
- A 3-pointer by freshman guard Adara Groman (Hopkinton, Mass.) tied the score, 4-4, at 7:12.
- The Black Bears went on a 7-0 run to build an 11-4 advantage at 4:34 and never relinquished that lead.
- Freshman guard Bella Stuart (Clifton Park, N.Y.) hit a 3-pointer off the bench to lift UNH within 13-9 at 2:30.
- The Black Bears scored 11 straight points to end the first quarter as Maine led 24-9.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Wildcats opened the second quarter with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to 10 points. Freshman center Paige Cote (Sanford, Maine) hit a 3-pointer at 9:58 and followed with a foul shot at 8:08 before Groman hit another 3-ball to advance the score to 26-16 at 7:46.
- After Maine's timeout, the Black Bears scored 17 consecutive points as part of a 22-5 run to close out the second quarter and extend their lead to 48-21.
THIRD QUARTER
- Maine outscored UNH 22-18 in the third quarter, led by Anne Simon's seven points and Kelly Fogarty's six points.
- Gogolin scored 11 points in the third quarter on the strength of 4-for-5 shooting from the floor.
- The Wildcats trailed 70-39 going into the fourth quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER
- The Wildcats opened the fourth quarter on a 7-2 run. Torres scored five of the seven points during this run with a 3-pointer and layup.
- UNH outscored Maine in the fourth quarter, 14-12.
UNH NOTEBOOK
- Sophomore guard Héléna Delaruelle (Enghien-les-Bains, France) finished with a team-high nine rebounds.
- Groman recorded eight points and five rebounds.
- Cote led UNH with a career-high three assists. She also had four points, four rebounds and a block.
- UNH traveled to UAlbany in the regular season and were swept in the two-game series at SEFCU Arena (59-47 and 63-50).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Gogolin and Torres combined to make 9 of 17 field goal attempts (52.9%); the rest of the team shot a combined 8-for-41 (19.5%).
- The Wildcats outshot the Black Bears from 3-point range; UNH shot 31.8 percent from the 3-point arc in comparison to Maine's 27.6 percent.
- The Black Bears shot 47 percent overall from the field, while UNH shot 29.3 percent.
- Maine shot 42.9 percent (9 of 21) from the floor in the first quarter in comparison to UNH's 20 percent (3 of 15) to build its 15-point lead through 10 minutes.
