BOSTON – Senior captain Bloem van den Brekel (Eindhoven, Netherlands) of the University of New Hampshire field hockey team was honored as America East Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 26.
van den Brekel scored three goals to lead UNH to victories against Vermont and Columbia last week.
She scored the game-tying goal with 5:04 remaining in regulation and then scored the game-winning goal with 21 seconds left in the first overtime session to lift the Wildcats to a 3-2 win against Columbia University on Oct. 24. That game-winning tally was of the highlight-reel variety, as she stopped at the top of the circle, pivoted and blasted a rising reverse-stick shot under the crossbar.
van den Brekel also scored a goal in UNH's 2-0 win at Vermont that kept the Wildcats' hopes of a conference postseason berth alive. Her tally gave New Hampshire a 2-0 lead at 22:06.
In addition to the three goals for six points, she finished the week with 10 shots, including seven vs. Columbia; nine of those 10 shots were on goal.
van den Brekel has scored a goal three consecutive games to increase her team-leading total to eight. She also has a team-high 17 points.
New Hampshire concludes the regular season with two home games this weekend: Oct. 29 (3 p.m.) vs. Stanford University and Oct. 31 (1 p.m.) against the University of Maine.
