DURHAM, N.H. – L.J. Owens led the Retrievers with 17 points as the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team fell to UMBC, 69-54, Saturday afternoon at Lundholm Gym. The Wildcats fall to 4-4 overall (3-2 America East), while the Retrievers improve to 8-2 overall (4-1 America East).

Redshirt freshman guard Blondeau Tchoukuiengo (Montreal, Quebec) led the Wildcats with 10 points.

UNH grabbed 37 rebounds and shot 34.5 percent from the field, while the Retrievers posted 39 rebounds and shot 37.9 percent.

The Wildcats will conclude the two-game series with UMBC in Durham on Sunday, Jan. 10 at noon on ESPN3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

First Half

After UMBC started the game on an 8-0 run, junior guard Marque Maultsby (Raleigh, N.C.) scored the first two points of the contest for the Wildcats on a jumper with 16:17 left in the first half.
With UNH now trailing 11-2, Tchoukuiengo and junior guard Qon Murphy (Charlotte, N.C.) each were good from long range to cut the UMBC lead to 11-8.
The Retrievers would then outscore the Wildcats by a 27-18 margin to take a 38-26 advantage to halftime.

Second Half

Junior forward Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) cut the deficit to 38-28 with a layup for the first two points of the second half.
With UMBC now leading 45-30, senior guard Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) scored on a layup to make it a 45-32 contest with 15:32 remaining in the second half.
But the Retrievers would go on a 12-0 run to increase the lead to 57-32. The Wildcats then outscored UMBC by a 22-12 margin for the remainder of the game but were unable to catch UMBC for the 69-54 final score.
