Guadarrama Scores Career-High 34 Points in 68-66 Loss to UMBC

DURHAM, N.H. – Nick Guadarrama (Newington, Conn.) scored a career-high 34 points, but the University of New Hampshire men's basketball team was edged down the stretch in Sunday afternoon's 68-66 loss to UMBC at Lundholm Gym.
Guadarrama made 11 of 20 field goal attempts, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and was a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line in 36+ minutes. Tayler Mattos (New London, N.H.) recorded his first double-double as a Wildcat with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
UMBC was led offensively by R.J. Eytle-Rock's 27 points.
UNH is now 4-5 overall, 3-3 in America East and 3-3 at home. UMBC improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the conference with a weekend sweep of the Wildcats.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
- There were nine lead changes and three tie scores in the first half; neither team led by more than six points in the opening 20 minutes
- UMBC's largest lead was three points: 21-18 at 5:28 and 23-20 at 5:08.
- With UNH leading 31-29, Guadarrama closed the first-half scoring with four free throws, the last two of which came with 0.8 seconds on the clock.
Second Half
- There were seven lead changes and five tie scores in the second half.
- UNH extended the margin to double digits, 43-33, on Guadarrama's 3-pointer at 16:28.
- Josh Hopkins (Greensboro, N.C.) hit a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Wildcats a 53-42 lead at 11:17.
- UMBC responded with a 15-0 run to surge back in front, 57-53, at 6:58. The rally was sparked by an offensive rebound and three-point play by Keondre Kennedy at 10:39.
- Kennedy then hit two more three throws and a pull-up jumper to trim the deficit to 53-49 at 9:14.
- A Brandon Horvath steal and dunk made it a two-point game, and then Eytle-Rock's back-to-back three-point plays gave the Retrievers a 57-53 lead.
- Guadarrama's driving layup ended UMBC's run at 6:23 and sparked a 7-2 spurt [capped by a Jayden Martinez (Cibolo, Texas) 3-pointer] that gave the 'Cats a 60-59 lead at 4:38.
- With UNH trailing 64-62, Guadarrama hit two three throws to tie the score at 2:32, and his next two foul shots gave the 'Cats a 66-65 lead at 1:56.
- Eytle-Rock made 1 of 2 free throws to forge the eighth tie of the game, 66-66, at 1:43 and his layup gave UMBC a 68-66 lead with 58 seconds remaining.
- UNH's Blondeau Tchoukuiengo (Montreal, Quebec) missed the front end of the 1-and-1 with 39 seconds left and Horvath pulled down the defensive rebound.
- With UMBC's shot clock wining down, Eytle-Rock missed a 3-pointer and Martinez grabbed the defensive rebound with eight seconds left.
- The Wildcats pushed the ball into the frontcourt. Tchoukuiengo caught a pass in the right corner with two seconds to play. He attempted to split a double team and his game-tying jumper fell short at the buzzer.

- Guadarrama bested his previous career high of 28 points vs. Holy Cross in November 2019.
- Mattos scored his 11 points on an efficient 5-for-8 shooting from the floor in 24 minutes; five of his 11 rebounds were on the offensive glass.
- Martinez finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
- Qon Murphy (Charlotte, N.C.) had a career-high five assists.
- UNH shot 42.9 percent (9-21) from 3-point range and made 11 of 15 free throws (73.3%).
