Senior co-captain set career bests on bars, all-around in win against Towson
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire senior co-captain Riley Freehling (Southington, Conn.) has been named the EAGL (East Atlantic Gymnastics League) Gymnast of the Week for her efforts in Saturday night's victory against Towson at Lundholm Gym.
Freehling recorded a season high in all four events and scored a personal best on vault (9.775, T-3rd) and all-around (39.200, 1stplace). The native of Southington, Conn., added a first-place score on uneven bars (9.800), second place on balance beam (9.825) and second place on floor exercise (9.800).
The Wildcats equaled their top score (195.125) of the season and defeated Towson (192.175) to improve to 4-2, 2-0 EAGL.
"I am extremely proud of Riley," head coach Lindsey Bruck Ayotte said. "She is one of the hardest working gymnasts I have ever coached, and it is very rewarding to see her hard work pay off. Each year she has added an event and it is great to have her in the all-around this year!"
This marks the first career weekly award for Freehling and the second straight week a UNH gymnast has earned an EAGL weekly honor. Alyssa Worthington (West Warwick, R.I.) was tabbed EAGL Rookie of the Week on Jan. 28.
UNH is back at Lundholm Gym this Saturday, Feb. 8 (7 p.m.), for its annual Stick It for the Cure meet. Fans can make their pledge to join the Wildcats in the quest to raise money for breast cancer research at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital's Seacoast Cancer Center.
