Gorgenyi leads high-scoring freshman contingent for Wildcats
PITTSBURGH– Buoyed by three freshmen posting team-leading scores, the University of New Hampshire gymnastics team improved from its Week 1 score and upped its season record to 2-0 courtesy of a 194.225-193.800 defeat of EAGL rival Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon at Fitzgerald Field House.
Kylie Gorgenyi(North Reading, Mass.) led the newcomer uprising with a first-place and career-best 9.800 on vault and a 9.725 on uneven bars (T-4th). Alyssa Worthington(West Warwick, R.I.) led all Wildcats on balance beam with a personal-best 9.800 for second-place honors, and Robyn Kelley(Wakefield, Mass.) set a career benchmark on floor exercise with a 9.775 to tie Emma Winer(Georgetown, Mass.) for runner-up honors.
"We had great energy today with the team scoring almost a full point higher than last week," head coach Lindsey Bruck Ayotte said. "We are just trying to focus on and control the things we can. The coaching staff is extremely proud of the team for how they handled themselves today. It's great to see them go out, do their job and have fun."
Michaela Burton posted first-place scores on bars (9.850), beam (9.850) and floor (9.825) for Pitt (0-1, 0-1 EAGL), while New Hampshire senior co-captain Riley Freehling(Southington, Conn.) earned the all-around championship with a 38.550.
UNH won all four events and had the high score in all four rotations.
"We are looking forward to being home next weekend and performing in front of our crowd," Bruck Ayotte added.
