A Dartmouth goal in the 88th minute the deciding factor.

HANOVER, N.H. – The University of New Hampshire women's soccer team faced Dartmouth College on Thursday evening, and despite a strong defensive performance, fell late to the Big Green by a score of 1-0.

Sophomore goalkeeper Cat Sheppard (Nesconset, N.Y.) tied a career-high six saves in the contest, as the Wildcats kept the Big Green off the board for a large portion of the game despite multiple Dartmouth scoring chances.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Dartmouth began the game with a lot of pressure on the UNH defense, with several scoring chances; Sheppard faced two shots on net in the first 10 minutes alone, and made both saves.
The Wildcats returned the pressure in the 11^th minute, Kaylan Williams (Marion, Ind.) went on a two-on-one run into the box but her shot attempt was blocked by the Dartmouth defense. The ensuing corner kick was cleared away by the Big Green.
New Hampshire had another scoring attempt in the 18^th minute when Ally Reynolds (Weymouth, Mass.) sent a cross into the box to Whitney Wiley (Vienna, Va.) but the cross was just a bit too far in front of Wiley and it went out for a Big Green goal kick.
The Big Green had the best chance of the first half to score, when in the 22^nd minute, a free kick from about 30 yards out was deflected up into the air away from the grasp of Sheppard. Dartmouth got a point-blank shot but it was off-target, over the crossbar.
Dartmouth began the second half with a good give-and-go attempt into the box in the 58^th minute, but the UNH defense cleared it away before a shot could be made.
Williams opened up the second half for New Hampshire with a good try from about 25 yards out, but her shot didn't bend enough to beat the crossbar and went high.
Liz Lane (Porter, Maine) had a great opportunity at a goal in the 75^th minute as she collected a failed clear by the Dartmouth goalkeeper at the top of the box. Lane tried to dribble around the diving goalkeeper but they got tied up and the ball was cleared.
After the UNH defense halted several straight Dartmouth attacks, the Big Green were able to convert on one last rush in the 88^th minute with a feed into the box and a shot that Sheppard couldn't get enough of to make the clean save.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

Both teams tallied just two shots on net in the first half; Dartmouth outshot UNH on net 5-0 in the second half.
Williams and Wiley led the team with three total shots, each with one on net.
Dartmouth was whistled for two offsides in the game, UNH for one.
