Wenczkowski’s Heroic Hat Trick Forces 3-3 Tie with #7 BU

The junior’s first career hat trick was the team’s first since 2017.
BOSTON – Junior Taylor Wenczkowski (Rochester, N.H.) potted her first career hat trick, with the final goal coming with less than 30 seconds left in regulation, as the University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team tied #7 Boston University by a score of 3-3 on Saturday afternoon.
Wenczkowski notched two goals in the final period, including the game-tying goal with an extra attacker. All three of her goals leveled the score at 1-1, 2-2, and finally 3-3.
Senior netminder and team captain Kyra Smith (Littleton, Colo.) turned aside 25 of 28 shots faced in the contest for her third tie of the season. Her record on the year sits at 12-9-3.
The two teams face off again Sunday afternoon at the Whittemore Center for UNH's Senior Day and Alumni Day. The Wildcats have two games remaining in the regular season, both at home, with the final game next weekend against #8 Boston College. GAME RECAP
- BU got the scoring started less than 10 minutes into the first period. A shot by Breanna Scarpaci found the back of the net and Boston University held its first lead of the day.
- The Wildcats had an opportunity to respond at the end of the period on a power play. The overlapping skater-advantage would end 18 seconds into the second period with no goals yet on the board for UNH.
- Six minutes into the second frame Wenczkowski tallied her first on another Wildcat power play opportunity. Assisted by the defensive pair of Marie-Jo Pelletier (Dalhousie, New Brunswick) and Tori Howran (Bancroft, Ontario) the Wildcats tied the game at 1-1.
- Boston University responded in the latter half of the second period, with a goal from Sammy Davis 14:44 in. The Terriers had their second lead of the afternoon, 2-1.
- BU's lone power play carried over from the end of the second period into the final frame. The 'Cats held off the Terrier's skater-advantage to keep the deficit at one goal.
- UNH set the score level again with Wenczkowski's second of the afternoon, coming 14:27 into the final frame, assisted by Lauren Martin (Cambridge, Ontario) and Paige Rynne (Ancaster, Ontario).
- With the score once again notted, BU broke the 2-2 tie just 36 seconds later, this one from Compher, to once again put the Terriers on top.
- It came down to the final minute of play, the Wildcats pulling Smith with 1:26 remaining in regulation. The Wildcats only took one shot that was blocked before Wenczkowski tallied her third of the afternoon, assisted by Meghara McManus (Milton, Mass.) and Jenna Rheault (Deering, N.H.). The equalizer would send the game into overtime.
- The Wildcats took the momentum of Wenczkowski's hat trick and came out firing in overtime outshooting the Terriers 4-2 in the extra frame. Both goaltenders stood tall in the overtime period, forcing a tie.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE:
- Wenczkowski's hat trick was the first of her career and the fourth multi-goal game for her on the season.
- The three goals were Wenczkowski's team-leading 17th, 18th, and 19th goals of the season.
- The last time a Wildcat tallied a hat trick was Jonna Curtis in January of 2017; she potted three goals and three assists in a 7-0 victory over Maine.
- The Wildcats have clinched a playoff spot and are currently tied with UConn for the sixth place spot at 22 points.
