Checovich Leads 'Cats to New England Championships

DURHAM, N.H. – Senior long jumper and hurdler Emma Checovich (No. Hampton, N.H.) leads the University of New Hampshire women's track & field team into the New England Championships at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H. this weekend on Friday, May 11 and Saturday, May 12.
The UNH women were runnerups to Albany at the America East championships last weekend at UMBC.
Checovich smashed the 35-year-old outdoor school record in the long jump at the America East championships by more than a foot with a leap of 18 feet, 8 inches. She already owned the record for the long jump indoors. She finished third in the event.
MEET INFORMATION
The New Englands begin at noon Friday with the women's hammer throw and pole vault and the men's javelin.
Competition on Saturday starts at 10 a.m. with heptathlon events for women and decathlon events for men. The women's high jump and shot put and men's discus and triple jump help kick off the field events at noon.

The NCAA East Preliminary meet will be held Thursday, May 24 to Saturday, May 26 in Tampa, Fla. The top 48 ranked athletes in the East will qualify for the East Preliminary meet. Shanahan in the hammer throw and senior Elinor Purrier in the 1500 meter run will likely be UNH's representatives at the Prelims. The top 12 finishers in Tampa, along with the top 12 finishers from the West Prelims in Sacramento will advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships from June 6 to June 9 in Eugene, Ore.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wildcat women collected 130 points to finish as the runnerup to Albany for the second straight season. Albany won the meet with 228 points.
- Senior Elinor Purrier (Montgomery, Vt.) won her 17th straight America East championship in the 1500 meter run in a time of 4 minutes, 15.07 seconds.
- (Bangor, Maine) finished third in the 1500 meters.
- (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was runnerup in the 5000 meters.
- Sophomore Elise Renahan (Atkinson, N.H.) finished seventh in the 400 meter dash.
- Checovich followed up her win in the long jump with a fourth-place result in the 100 meter hurdles.
- Senior Shelby Strickland (Kennebunk, Maine) finished in a three-way tie for third in the high jump.
- Senior Tessa Artruc (Livonia, N.Y.) was seventh and senior Rachel Morrison (Westwood, Mass.) was eighth in the high jump.
- Junior Emileigh Glode (Boxborough, Mass.) took seventh in the 400 meter hurdles.
- The women's 4x100 team of Checovich, junior Jessica Hackett (Dover, N.H.), Renahan and senior Kristen Bourque (Londonderry, N.H.) finished sixth.
- The 4x400 team which included Artruc, Renahan, Hackett, and Checovich, finished fifth.
- The team of Masters, freshman Cayla Barretto (Woburn, Mass.), Glode and Hannah Kimball (Atkinson, N.H.) took third in the 4x800 relay.
- Senior Kari Murnane (Byram, N.J.) finished second in the vault.
- Junior Sabrina Anderson (Hopewell, N.J.) was third and freshman Jordan Hoffmann eighth in the pole vault.
- Sophomore Alyssa Colbert (Smithfield, R.I.) was runnerup in the javelin and senior Carly Orlacchio (Cromwell, Conn.) was third.
- Sophomore Madeline Quigley (Rowley, Mass.) finished third and sophomore Michaella Conery (Concord, N.H.) was seventh in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
- Senior Emily Wernig (Gilford, N.H.) took third in the hammer throw and senior Mary Mullen (Loudon, N.H.) was fifth.
- Freshman Caroline Mahoney (Bedford, N.H.) finished fifth in the 10,000 meters, senior Kayla Farren (Nashua, N.H.) and sophomore Morgan Sansing (Chester, N.H.) was seventh.
