Perfect 10 Earns Senior Specialist of Week ; Freshman Earns Fifth Rookie of Week
DURHAM, N.H. – University of New Hampshire senior gymnast Casey Lauter (Northport, N.Y.), who scored a perfect 10.0 on balance beam in her final home collegiate meet last Sunday at the Whittemore Center, was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Specialist of the Week for the third time this season, and freshman Lauren Diggan (Sinking Spring, Pa.) was honored as EAGL Rookie of the Week for a league-leading fifth time in weekly awards announced Tuesday.
Lauter scored the first 10.0 on beam for the Wildcats since March 23, 1996, and only the fourth perfect score in University history in a quad meet against No. 8 Kentucky, Brown and Yale. EAGL's top-ranked beam competitor (9.91 Regional Qualifying Score) also registered a victory with a 9.85 at Bridgeport in a dual meet Thursday, March 8.
"Casey is so deserving of Specialist of the Week," said head coach Gail Goodspeed. "She always strives for perfection in and out of the gym. It is great to see all her hard work paid off in her final home meet at UNH. She has been so close to getting that perfect 10.0 so many times with great routines, and she was finally rewarded."
Lauter previously was feted as EAGL Specialist of the Week on Jan. 9 and Feb. 6.
In the Wildcats' two meets last week, Diggan scored at least a 9.750 on all six events that she competed, including four marks of 9.800 or above. She placed first on vault (9.775), second on uneven bars (9.825) and sixth on floor exercise (9.800) at Bridgeport. In the Senior Day quad meet, Diggan scored a 9.750 on vault, a 9.875 on bars and a 9.825 on floor. Her uneven-bar RQS of 9.865 is tied for second in EAGL.
"Diggan did it again! She works so hard every day and fights to make every routine better than the one before," Goodspeed said. "She is such a pleasure to coach and we are lucky to have her as a Wildcat."
Diggan's four previous Rookie of the Week honors came Jan. 9, Jan. 30, Feb. 20 and Feb. 27.
UNH, currently ranked 33rd in the country, travels for a dual meet against the University of Illinois at Chicago on Sunday, March 18 (3 p.m. ET). For more information on the UNH gymnastics team, visit www.unhwildcats.com.
