Manchester native set nine school records from 1997-2001
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Former record-setting University of New Hampshire quarterback Ryan Day '02 will become the new head football coach at Ohio State University, it was announced Tuesday. Day, a three-year starter at QB during his career (1997-2001) with the Wildcats, will replace Urban Meyer, who announced at a press conference he is retiring following the Rose Bowl Game on Jan. 1.
According to the Ohio State Athletics website, the 39-year-old Day will take over the program Jan. 2 with a five-year contract that will pay him $4.5 million annually.
Day, the 1996 New Hampshire Gatorade High School Player of the Year, was recruited out of nearby Manchester Central High School by legendary Wildcat head coach and 2016 NFF College Football Hall of Fame inductee Bill Bowes. In 1999, then first-year head coach Sean McDonnell installed Day as UNH's starting quarterback under first-year offensive coordinator Chip Kelly.
In his tenure as Wildcat signal caller, Day set nine UNH records, including career marks for pass completions (653), touchdown passes (53), completion percentage (59.9 percent) and total offense (8,492 yards). He is still ranked third in program history in pass attempts (1,089) and fourth in both passing yards (7,670) and completions.
As a senior captain in 2001, Day established career highs with 233 completions (No. 9 in school history), 379 attempts (No. 8) and 2,605 passing yards (No. 10).
Day holds the University single-game mark for most pass attempts (65), which he set Nov. 4, 2000, when he helped rally the Wildcats from a 31-3, late third-quarter deficit to a 45-44, overtime victory at No. 2 Delaware.
After earning his degree in Business Administration in 2002, Day began his coaching career as the tight ends coach at UNH that season. His climb through the coaching ranks included stops at Boston College (2003-04; 2007-11; 2012-14), Florida (2005), Temple (2006; 2012) and NFL positions working as QB Coach under Chip Kelly with the Philadelphia Eagles (2015) and San Francisco 49ers (2016) before arriving as the co-offensive coordinator/QB coach at Ohio State in 2017.
