The Wildcats, who were blanked by an FCS opponent for only the third time since 1995, put together an impressive defensive display against the No. 1 team in the land. Rick Holt (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Quinlen Dean (Greenbelt, Md.) each recorded 10 tackles. Of Dean's 10 stops included 2.0 tackles for loss and a sack. Jared Kuehl (Plymouth, N.H.) registered a pair of sacks among his seven tackles (six solo), and Jae'Wuan Horton (Stafford, Va.) also secured a sack of JMU quarterback Bryan Schor (20-27, 176 yards, 2 TD, INT).
Trevor Knight (Amherst, N.H.) completed 10 of 25 passes for 136 yards with no TDs for the first time this season and an interception. Evan Gray (Centreville, Va.) carried eight times for 21 yards and DeUnte Chatman (Houston, Texas) picked up 20 yards on nine rushes for a Wildcat squad that netted 27 rushing yards on 32 carries (including three QB sacks).
Malik Love (Alcoa, Tenn.) led UNH receivers with five catches for 55 yards and Kieran Presley (Amherst, Mass.) added four receptions for 58 yards and a team- and career-long 42-yard catch.
JMU's Trai Sharp paced all running backs with 18 carries for 83 yards, and Schor's top receiving target was John Miller (five catches-65 yards).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
1ST QUARTER
•The two teams combined for 96 total yards (UNH-24 yards, JMU-72 yards) in a scoreless first quarter.
•JMU converted two 4th-down plays during a 13-play, 53-yard drive that took 6:07 off the clock, but the Dukes failed to score when Ethan Ratke's 39-yard field goal fell short.
•James Madison punter Harry O'Kelly rumbled for 30 yards down the right sideline on a 4th-and-7 fake that took the ball from the JMU 38 to the UNH 32; an offside penalty against the Wildcats on 4th-and-3 from the 25 prolonged the drive prior to Ratke's miss.
2ND QUARTER
•Schor hit Ishmael Hyman for a 13-yard touchdown pass with 10:38 left in the second quarter to stake the Dukes to a 7-0 lead. Schor's 52nd career scoring toss moved him atop the school's all-time leader board. The scoring drive was five plays, 46 yards.
•Schor's second scoring strike of the quarter was a 1-yard hookup with tight end Clayton Cheatham for a 14-0 lead at the 5:17 mark. The touchdown was preceded by back-to-back connections from Schor to John Miller for 26 and 16 yards, respectively, to place the ball inside the 1.
•The Wildcats threatened to get on the board late in the half when Knight threaded the needle on a 33-yard pass down the left sideline that Neil O'Connor (Leominster, Mass./three catches-33 yards) hauled in at the JMU 22. Two plays later, however, the Dukes forced the game's first turnover when Andrew Ankrah (eight tackles, sack, two FF) caused a fumble that was recovered by Jimmy Moreland (five tackles) at the 20.
•JMU then embarked on a 10-play, 68-yard drive to move to the UNH 12 with nine seconds left in the half, but Schor's 3rd-and-10 pass attempt was picked off by Horn in the end zone.
3rd QUARTER
•The UNH defense blanked its opponent in the third quarter for the second straight week and third time in four weeks.
•Presley notched a career-long 42-yard reception on UNH's initial possession of the second half on a drive that advanced to the JMU 21. But an interception on 4th-and-3 was returned for an 82-yard touchdown by Rashad Robinson to give the Dukes a 21-0 advantage at 12:25 of the third.
4th QUARTER
•Niether team scored in the fourth quarter.
GAME NOTES
•Robinson's third-quarter Pick-6 was the first against the Wildcats since Towson's Tye Smith returned an INT 45 yards for a TD at Unitas Stadium on Nov. 12, 2011.
•Horn's 17-yard punt return in the third quarter was a career long and set up the Wildcats with their best starting field position of the game (JMU 48).
•O'Connor completed a 26-yard pass to Love in the third quarter that allowed UNH to enter the Dukes' red zone (17-yard line) for the first time. It also improved O'Connor's season passing numbers to 3-for-3 for 95 yards and a TD.
•The 'Cats came up empty on that drive when a 42-yard field goal try from Max Pedinoff (Newtown, Pa.) was wide right.
•It was the first time all season Knight failed to throw a TD pass and the first time since UNH's NCAA second-round playoff loss at James Madison on Dec. 3, 2016.
•The Wildcats were shut out for the first time since Sept. 3, 2016, at San Diego State. It was the first shutout defeat against FCS competition since a 17-0 setback at William & Mary on Nov. 2, 2013.
NEXT UP: The Wildcats make it back-to-back trips to Virginia when they square with William & Mary (2-6, 0-5) on Saturday, Nov. 4. Opening kickoff from Zable Stadium will be 2 p.m. For more information, visit www.unhwildcats.com.
